Agreed. Or maybe the demand to take back Billups will dissapear, although I honestly think he makes us a better team than Felton.

Yep. I'd love to see Billups in NY, even though he's lost a step, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if we just got Melo.

This is an insane deal. 4 picks!?! This only makes sense for NJ.

Problem for the Knicks is that if you let this go through, there's now another power team in the East and no big FA's to go after this offseason.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Supposedly two of those picks might be used to convey Troy Murphy to another team and get Denver more cap relief.

Correction

"Problem for the Knicks is that if you let this go through, there's now another power team in the East and no big FA's to go after this offseason."

On the contrary. There are some talented big men in the draft and Donnie Walsh knows what he is doing.

So this is what NJ looks like after 2011/12 season when CP3/Williams/Dwight come free. All would command $16M+.

Melo 20
Outlaw 7
Morrow 4
Farmer 4.25
Petro 3.5
Brook 4.2
Brook Hold 5.25
Balkman 1.65
-------------------
49.85

Maybe the Nets could move Balkman, Farmer but that would cost them. And the $49M does not include picks, cap holds for roster spots, prob push the $49M number up to ~$52. Maybe the cap in 2 years is $64M IF everything goes swimmingly for the league.

Nets still in tough spot to add second star.

I don't get the Troy Murphy trade and get cap relief??? He is an expiring contract, so he is off the books in less than 2 months.

Also you gotta believe the Nets re-sign Humphries or a different starting PF this offseason. That's not going to be cheap

If melo signs that extension, then we all know it was about the money..

If the nets make that trade, there meager fan base will know that it was all about the $ (just get fans in the seats to see melo drop 50 in yet...another loss)

If donnie gives in to denver, without a counter offer that favors us or a mutual deal, he should get no extension(but dolan would think the opposite)

Im not giving up an entire starting five for 1 1/2 players (not even for MJ)..Injuries happen regularly in the nba, and depth along with stars help you over come that..

The celtic and lakers lost titles because of Perkins and Bynum being out with injuries, and had nobody to fill that loss..1999 finals Ewing goes down..think about it..

They have 1 1/2 years. They probably could trade Outlaw also by adding a pick and/or throwing in $3 cash. We see that the Russian is serious about spending money; taking risks; and building a winning team.

But I'd like to focus on what we need because we already have a good team. We need a defensive center. So if the Melo to Nyets happens who can we get with Eddy's expiring. If Nene is out because Denver are a bunch of douches, then maybe Dalembert. It shouldn't take much to get him.

I can't wait for this to be over - gotta love stories like this. Nobody knows the truth, I hope for Anthony's sake he doesnt sign with the Nets but being a Knick fan it wouldn't surprise me.

Right now Denver is over the Luxury tax limit, which is $70M. If their payroll is $80M, they have to pay $10M in luxury tax. However, if they move Troy Murphy to Twolves and say include $3M and 2 picks (Troy Murphy would have around $3-4M left on contract at this point in season), they get under the luxury tax limit: They would save the $10 in tax.

Something like that.

Haha, seriously. I was going to ask the word "Again" be added.

I really need to quit opening these Melo threads until I see officially in the title (so probably the 11th hour next Thursday?).

They would have 1 year. And didn't the Nets just trade 4 picks? Where the heck are they going to get enough to trade a $7M contract for a player who is almost completely useless?

Hmm. I'm wondering if Jay-Z will be the deciding factor. If he can talk up entertainment opportunities for Lala... who knows?

The key to me is that Melo will be 30 when the Brooklyn Arena opens... will he really want to waste two years of his prime playing to an empty house and an apathetic fan base?

Very interesting.

Glad this will all be over soon.

They'll have til the summer of 2012. But this is a minor point in this whole thread. I don't see the cap space a problem for the Nets to sign another star FA in 2012. Let's see what Melo says this weekend, and let's hope Dolan doesn't go ballistic and gut the entire team to get Melo.
