This is a non issue. MDA has input, but he's not calling the shots. He'll coach the team he's given. Liking it as opposed to what he has now is another story. Walsh values Mike's input as the guy who will be coaching the team, but that only goes so far. The fact is that Walsh is the one with his neck on the line in this negotiation. He's gonna do what he thinks is best for the franchise and on some level has to please his boss, Dolan. Dolan is the final decision maker and I know he wants Melo bad. Mike will adjust and i'm sure he'll be able to make it work.

It's gonna change things, cuz now he really doesn't meet much resistance with this roster. Once you add Melo and maybe Billups, you lose a bit of control, cuz Melo will be the big money investment and star and Billups couldn't give a crap what anyone says at this point in his career. Still both guys will likely be consummate professionals and will want things to go smoothly when they 1st get here. I'm sure they'll want to do everything they can to help make this a success. IMO Mike will be just fine. He's coached all the top players in the NBA at some point in his career and they know and respect him.

yes it's true it's Walsh's neck on the line in this negotiation, but if he gets the deal consummated i think the pressure is off his shoulders for the most part, especially in the eyes of Dolan... it's MDA's neck on the line from then on... the point this article raises is that MDA might be influencing these negotiations because of the possible ramifications it will have on his capacity as the head coach going forward.

i personally don't have any concerns over how MDA will coach Melo & Billups... those guys are proven vets bigtime in big moments, i don't foresee any kinds of problems w/MDA intergrating them into his offense... i think both guys will respect MDA as a head coach... none of that is in question... the article deals with whether DW or MDA have more to lose if the Knicks end up giving up too much in this trade.

T, Donnie has the ability to bring in a 2nd super friend for Amare to play with WITHOUT having to trade. That was the cap clearing process too!

I doubt that Donnie would be like "I did my job bitch, now do yours!"

That is not gonna win games now is it?

If dolan jumps the shark on this one I see Walsh leaving cuz Dolan is possesed by Isiah the Rasputin and if the Rat returns I would expect MDA to leave also.

the way i interpret this article is Lupica making the argument that it might be MDA who might be holding up the Melo trade & not necessarily DW... i think there might be some points to consider here... if u think about it DW's plan has been to get 2 superstar players to build around from the very beginning... he's been in dump salary mode for the past 2 years to get to this point where he could make a deal to get a player like Melo... i think Lupica's suggesting it doesn't make much sense that DW would be reluctant to make a trade that fulfills his mission statement, especially when he's in the last year of his contract & trying to appease his boss to get an extension... he seems to be suggesting that a Melo trade puts a ton more pressure on MDA because losing too many pieces is less attractive to the coach who will be coaching the team after the deal gets done, & not so much on the GM since he would have essentially fulfilled his original plan if he succeeded in pairing Melo with Amare in NY.

First, Lupica assumes that Donnie would trade 3 starters+ for Melo and then comes up with an afterthought that MDA would be more worried.

And then you just assumed that MDA is holding up the trade. How does MDA hold up the trade? Is he also GM?

i didn't assume anything... i'm reiterating what the article is suggesting, just considering some of the points he's making in this article... why are you assuming that DW makes all his decisions w/o consulting MDA on what he's planning to do?

huh? I'm not.

Yes for Walsh the biggest part of his job would be done. He would've achieved his goal of 2 Elite players on the roster. Now I can understand how MDA might not want to be left with a team that has no bench. I truthfully don't think it will come to that. I think that middle ground we talked about will be reached and this will turn out fine. This will allow Mike to have a team he can still win with and I do expect the team to win and make Mike look good. The more talent you put at the top of this system the better it gets. We've all seen how unstoppable this system can be with guys that can truly score the basketball at the key positions. Mike should LOVE the prospect of having a big 3 that can really score the ball.

fair enough... a happy middle ground would be great if it could be reached, we both like the idea of Melo on the Knicks... but w/the Dolan factor hanging over these talks i think a Melo trade is gonna get done & DW might end up having to give up more than MDA would like to give up to appease him... 7 more days dude... let the countdown begin.

Your talking like your a fly on the wall in the know what Dolan is thinking. The man does not even give interviews!

This deal is of course possible but I think your discounting too much having Amare and Melo left with too little to play with. WE traded many young players/picks to dress up Ewing and it failed.

But it did not fail at the box office.

So LIke I said, if Dolan is driving this the team is screwed and its all your fault cuz your in favor of it.

YOur just a big fat poopy head starphucher!!!!

And every year we get done it will be on your head. You and your Isiah loving starphuching worshiping buddies!

Just kidding man. I feel better! z

It will all get sorted out soon enough!

it depends on what your definition of a "starphuch" is... my definition is selling out for 2nd & 3rd tier players or past their prime stars that come with baggage & huge question marks that won't have a big positive impact on our team... Zach Randolph, Stephon Marbury, Antonio McDyess... those were all starphuchs IMO... i was dead set against Zach & McKnee, had high hopes for Marbury which obviously got dashed with the quickness... i'm not always in favor of starphuchs... i don't consider Melo a starphuch, to me he's a top 10 player in the NBA he's the reason why we try to accumulate assets to begin... i also don't favor giving up every young player we own to get him either, i think i've made myself pretty clear on that from the very beginning... i do think we need to be willing to give up Gallo or Landry to get him, possibly both... it's not the ideal scenario but it's more realistic than to think we'll end up getting Melo to sign here as a free agent IMHO.

Ok, so then what?

YOu start building a team to run. You build it, then trade your players, have 29 games to starphuch with it and then fire the coach and then be limited in what you can do?

Great Idea!

i don't see Lupica suggesting any of this, he's just laying out the idea that completing the Melo trade makes every bit of sense for DW as a GM... he's under pressure to get this deal done... if he gets Melo then he's done his job in the eyes of Dolan... the pressure then goes to MDA to get the pieces to work under his system & win games... why do you think your plan not to starphuch is the only reasonable plan? plenty of teams in NBA history have starphuched their way to a championship... DW's plan is a starphuch plan, if u think it's not u haven't really been paying attention... he would never have traded assets to clear cap space in the first place if his eye wasn't focused on going after superstar players in free agency or trades.

I think you are re-defining starphuck to the one user who actually defined it. My understanding was the a significant part of starphuck was to also handcuff your team for future moves or development, which certainly hasn't happened.

Nalod, could we get a clearer picture on that?

Nalod is the originator of the word "starphuch"? i wasn't aware of this... i've seen news media using the term all the time, it's used on every sports forum i've ever read, before i ever got to the UK boards.

Hey Look man, Melo like Amar'e, wants to be here. Even more than that, he's not scared of Kobe or Lebron and that means a LOT. Now imagine having STAT who isn't scared of anyone, but instead instills fear and Melo who does the same thing? We haven't had that kind of Combo since the last title team. This is another level of talent we're talking about here. Even if we have to give up a ton to get this guy, it puts us much closer to our goal of putting together a title contender. After this deal, you're not looking for the rare elite player anymore. We'd only need to get role players and they're a dime a dozen in the NBA. I have to believe that MDA kind of knows this already.

Remember how awful the guys around AI were on those Philly teams? He carried the load on O and they did the rest on D. Weird, but it worked. We're not talking about that level of disparity. We'd still have good players left even after sending away a good portion of the roster. But more important is that we'd have two of the top scorers in the NBA on our team. Matched with the top offensive coach in the NBA. It seems to me that it would work very well and MDA would be more than happy.

i'm just going to copy this out of the last thread where i've asked you about this.

you still haven't addressed how we're going to "easily replace" those players with no cap space, no draft picks and no valuable trade assets. miami is going to be in the market for the same role players that we are. and they will have the edge based on their "big 3" v. our "big 2." they will be the top destination for ring chasing vets. we will be left with scraps.

how do we beat Miami? everything we do has to be focused on beating them. like it or not, they will be the standard bearer in the east when the celtics eventually get too old. how do we beat miami if they have a better "big 3" and a better supporting cast??

so?

Most role players are fairly even in terms of their ability. The avg. NBA player is what you're talking about here. How those players all fit together is more important than perception of how good those role players are individually. What we'll need in a role player may be different than what the Heat will need, based on the holes they're trying to fill verses the holes we're trying to fill. However, IMO there are more than enough role players to go around and there are various ways to get them. It's not like the Heat can just absorb every last role player and leave us with no options.

Also we don't yet know what the final package would look like, so I'm not sure just what holes we'll end up having to try and fill. My point isn't that we should just GIVE the Nuggets what they want without trying to reduce the package. I just think that even if we did give up a big package, we'd be able to survive that.

We'd still have good players left even after sending away a good portion of the roster. But more important is that we'd have two of the top scorers in the NBA on our team. Matched with the top offensive coach in the NBA. It seems to me that it would work very well and MDA would be more than happy.

i'm just going to copy this out of the last thread where i've asked you about this.

you still haven't addressed how we're going to "easily replace" those players with no cap space, no draft picks and no valuable trade assets. miami is going to be in the market for the same role players that we are. and they will have the edge based on their "big 3" v. our "big 2." they will be the top destination for ring chasing vets. we will be left with scraps.

how do we beat Miami? everything we do has to be focused on beating them. like it or not, they will be the standard bearer in the east when the celtics eventually get too old. how do we beat miami if they have a better "big 3" and a better supporting cast??

so?

that's pretty ridiculous, there's no way we can get awesome role players like Joel Anthony or Reggie Evans on a MLE?... there's no way to sign minimum salary players like Carlos Arroyo or Earl Watson because they'd rather play with Lebron & Wade in MIA? then what's the point every other team in the NBA shouldn't bother targetting role players then they're all on their way to join the big 3.
