This is called strategy. Doesn't it make sense to get the better player locked in at a lower contract? Rautins deal is not any longer than Fields, though, AFAIK.

When Rautins and Landry were being presented with the Knicks offer, Donnie's wheelchair and neckbrace and Dolan's fumbling around obviously made Landry a bit nervous to sign longterm. Rautins, OTOH, clearly wasn't as turned off by the optics.
