As great as Amar'e is, he's damaged goods and his game is based quite a bit on his athleticism. If you're Donnie, you try to contend now, not years down the road.

How would you pitch that to Amar'e?

"Hey, we have a chance to get Melo and take a shot at a ring this year, but we feel like Deron Williams is incrementally better, so even though we have no idea if he would come here, we're going to blow two seasons in your prime. Thanks for being a trooper."

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I do wonder how Amare and Howard would fit together. That would be one ridiculous front court. I honestly feel Howard would get in Amare's way a little, but he would also clean up every one of Amare's misses.

I didnt even think of it that way. Amare would slash Donnie's tires.

Right. Amare comes here and says I think I can bring Melo and CP3 with me, lets ball. And we say, "Thanks but you can keep your little friends. We have our eye on some guys who are pretty happy where they are. We like long shots, lets coast."

You get Melo and you pretty much guarantee getting one more top flight player because the Knicks will finally have more than just the hype of playing in NY. It will have the pieces to contend and I have a feeling there will be more than one elite player who will be interested in coming to NY.

I realize that to have 2012 cap space you'd have to trade Wilson for picks and/or players on rookie contracts and would be willing to do that.

According to Steve Kerr's medical expertise, Amare's knees are literally about explode at any second. The first tow rows will be littered with patella shrapnel. So waiting another season and a half to further improve the team may be a bit risky. Marc Gasol is not an answer by himself. Amare and Melo are a better platform. So if you can get Anthony on the team, there is still going to be some space (depending upon the CBA) to get another player or two, even without Walsh letting people go or making moves. You combine that with the fact that Walsh, or maybe even Thomas, will make some moves to get more space to make a run at some of folks mentioned and why wait more? Get Melo now if you can and work towards more flexibility for 2012 while they play together with Felton and Gallo. If Raymond continues to play well, CP may not be necessary and the focus could be solely on Dwight.

I can smell the trophy, the rings. and the banner now...

Hopefully no one. You trade Wilson and Gallo for picks and/or players who would still be on rookie contracts in the 2012 off-season.

I'm only talking about waiting one extra six month season.

Well then he was the wrong piece to add to a 29 win team! I love Amare and he's played great but I still am only lukewarm on the signing.

So you strip the team down to Amare, Fields and scrubs for the chance there might be a FA available who might want to come here and who might be a marginally better fit than Melo?

I'll pass, thanks. Get the Melo deal done, fill in a couple of pieces and we're good to go.

For me it's a wait and see. I love that he's taken the team out of the dumpster on his back with some help from his pal Felton. He's has exceeded EVERYONE'S expectations, is eating up playing in and for NY, and by all accounts has been the type of leader and locker room presence that I've never seen or heard of in NY. So for now I can't complain. If he maintains this for the majority of his tenure in NY, I will only view it as a smart and wonderful move. If he's part of the Knicks winning some rings along the way, it will go down as one of the best moves ever by a Knicks GM since they brought in Earl to play with Walt.

On the other hand, if he ends ups being injured or a shell of presence he's been for the majority of his NY tenure it will have been a gamble that didn't pay off. A mistake only because the issues were known. Because any great player in any sport can go down at anytime and end up never playing again. It's like buying fruit, as sometimes that best looking, smelling, and feeling piece tastes horrible, but you take the chance because when it's good the reward is happiness.

No, it's down to Amare, Fields, and good draft picks and players on rookie contracts. All for the chance to get a player that is a billion times better than Carmelo.
I'm still not certain I'd go that way as opposed to just passing on Melo and keeping what we have. I'd view getting Melo as a third option. (Any offer I'd make for Melo would be one Denver would turn down.)
