Curry + AR and go fk yourselves

i don't think there's any way that's gonna get it done... Denver could probably find a team willing to give up more just for a Melo rental... i have a feeling DW is angling to include 1 of our 3 young guys & a couple 1st round picks, 1 that he gets from trading AR & maybe purchasing another.

he said the ordeal has cost his team wins & has become too much of a distraction to the team... unless Melo makes it known he's willing to sign an extension w/the Nets & something gets hammered out quickly on the DL i dunno if they're gonna want to get back into the discussions... the longer this drama plays out w/Melo refusing to sign an extension w/them, the worse their franchise looks to other players... u gotta figure it's embarassing to the team, their fans & to their owner that they haven't been able to get this deal done after all they were willing to give up.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov's stunning declaration that he is pulling out of the trade negotiations for Carmelo Anthony was a tremendous play in this months-long game of poker. Either Prokhorov is trying to lower the price while forcing the Nuggets to trade Anthony on New Jersey's terms, or else he truly has decided that Anthony is no longer the lovely prize he appeared to be in September, when the Nets first believed they could acquire him.

In either case, the Knicks now appear to be back in play for Anthony. Since August, New York and Chicago have been known to be the two places Anthony would be willing to commit to long term.

Nets' Prokhorov: We're done chasing Carmelo

Here's the other factor: Last week Anthony told SI that his goal is to sign a three-year, $65 million extension before July, when the expiring collective bargaining agreement gives way to the anticipated era of smaller salaries and shortened contracts.

So where does this leave the Nuggets?

They can continue to pursue a deal with the Nets, though it will be on New Jersey's terms now that Prokhorov has decided he's had enough.

They can go back to the Knicks and Bulls to see what the terms would be on a trade for Anthony.

They can trade him to any of the several teams that have shown interest in acquiring Anthony on a for-rental basis, which would leave Anthony at the mercy of his new employer and put him at risk of being a free agent during the long anticipated months of the upcoming lockout. If a "franchise tag'' becomes part of the next CBA -- and this is all guesswork, because no one but no one knows exactly what the new rules will be -- then his rights could be held by his new team, a team not of choosing, indefinitely.

Two other options exist for Denver. The Nuggets could do nothing for the time being. They could hold onto Anthony, make the playoffs with him and Chauncey Billups (who was expected to join Anthony in the reported blockbuster deal to New Jersey) and then move Anthony during the trading window around the draft. At that time Anthony would still be eligible for a sign-and-trade under the current rules.

The last option would be for Anthony to relent and sign the three-year, $65 million extension offered to him by Denver. This would be difficult for all sides to swallow, including fans of the Nuggets who for months have been hearing reports that Anthony wants out.

But in my interview with Anthony last week, he never explicitly ruled out re-signing with the Nuggets, and he and his agent, Leon Rose, have worked to maintain a decent relationship with the team. To repeat: Anthony has acknowledged that signing the $65 million extension is his goal. If the Nuggets refuse to send him to New York or Chicago because they don't like what they're receiving in the exchange, and if Anthony doesn't like the identity of the team that is offering Denver the best trade on a rental basis, then what's to stop him from re-signing with the only team he has known? Because if he doesn't sign the $65 million extension before July, he will never be able to sign it thereafter.

so much for all the paranoia about us having no shot of getting Melo without matching NJ's offer.

Indeed.

I wonder if by "too expensive" he means, for a player that didn't want to re-sign there?

How much more expensive could it have gotten, they were already offering nearly everything they had?

First point, Gangta move by the owner. He basically said to Denver and Anthony, I am tired of all the BS, we are done. Now I personally think that if Denver and Anthony came back tomorrow and said we agree and I will sign the extension, the Nets would bite. But basically, this move is a big F-U to the Nuggets and Anthony and all this drama.

Second point, the Nuggets management really overplayed their hand on this one. The Nets were offering these fools Favors, Harris (who Denver could have flipped), and 2-3 1st round picks. That is a gold mine of cap relief and potential talent. They are not going to get a better offer and pretty much everyone in the NBA knew it, which is why Walsh could do nothing but wait it out. The Nuggets should have taken the offer. Instead, they were trying to get the last drop of blood that they could out of the deal and it all fell apart. If they think anyone is going to offer anything better in June, they are fooling themselves. Their only hope now is that Anthony was bluffing and he will sign an extension with them rather than risk losing that big contract, but that is a big if. If his wifey wants to go back to New York and he wants to go back to New York, he can make most of the money back in endorsements in New York, so he would not be losing that much and teaming with Amare would give him a better team.

i don't think he meant exclusively in terms of the talent the Nets had to give up... he alluded to the strain these talks have had on the team as a whole & on the players & fans... i'm sure he also has the public image of the franchise in mind as well... how stupid did they look continuing to engage a team in a trade for a player that obviously had no desire to play for his franchise?

yeah, it's still not a given that Melo's coming here, but our chances just got a whole lot better w/NJ out of the picture.

Denver needs to save face and just take Danilo Gallinari, Eddy Curry and two 1st Round picks.

It's better than nothing. : /

the Nets weren't going to give up all that w/o Melo agreeing to sign an extension... the Nuggets obviously were unable to get a commitment from Melo directly so they arranged that meeting so the Nets could try & make their sales pitch... if they had they would have made the trade already.

TheGame - By most accounts the nuggets were ready and willing to ink the deal, it was Melo shooting it down saying he wouldn't sign an extension. I think that stuff about nuggets wanting 5 draft picks was exaggeratedand they were probably trying to save face - albiet poorly.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

word... who's gonna give them better than that for a Melo rental? unless the Bulls or some other blackhorse team steps up to the plate & Melo is willing to go there, i don't see how the Nuggets can get better than that package.

I don't see it. Either Denver will trade him here for a very fair offer from Donnie Walsh or they will just hold on to him and lose him for nothing or maybe hope they can get something more in a S&T. But I don't see them doing business with Chicago and taking on Luol Deng. And who knows if Carmelo Anthony even wants to go to Chicago.

Most of the stuff i read suggested that the Nuggets delayed this deal for about 7-8 days while they were trying to get someone to take Harrington or whether they could get Batum. YOu don't do that in the NBA. By the time a deal breaks in the news, the trade either happens in the next day or two or it doesn't. The Nuggets overplayed their hand and if they finally did come to realize the Nets' offer was as good as it was going to get, they took too long. There is no way the owner cancels if the Nets had agreed last week. Anthony would have met with the Nets and said yeah or nay, but Nuggets playing around pretty much turned this whole situation bad.

i agree, i don't see them taking Deng back in that deal... that's why i think Gallo will be the guy going in any Melo trade... Wilson's gonna command a Deng level contract this summer & i think DEN already has contracts they're looking to dump in Harrington to take on any more big money deals during a rebuilding phase... they've said all along they're only looking for young players on reasonable contracts & multiple picks.
