This would explain why he is pushing so hard for the extension.Makes no sense to opt out and sign a 5 year deal when half the season is over making the deal effectively 4.5 years. He can just make the prorated amount from Denver and sign a potential 5 year deal summer 2012.
not sure I follow this logic. If there is a lockout, no one gets paid, whether you have a current contract or if you just opted out of one and signed a new one. so it doesn't matter either way.
No one gets paid until the season resumes. When the season resumes your salary is prorated.
If Melo falls down a flight of stairs and breaks his back he is still entitled to his guaranteed prorated salary. See Jayson Williams. If breaks his back with no contract I dont see him signing a new deal.
As I said it is easy to say guaranteed cash doesnt matter when it's not your cash. Carmelo has to opt OUT of 18.5 million dollars to become a UFA which is easier said than done. He also has a wife and kid too think about.
if he was worried about something like that, wouldn't he just sign the $65M and be done with it?
I mean, he ONLY has $18.M + half of this year left on his current contract and could break his back over the next year and a half, what would LALA and kid do without the extra $65M?
