I think you have to keep Wilson if you have the opportunity to. The guys are only one year a part and I think Wilson can fill so many different roles his value is higher.

I hate the fact that these debates resort to taking shots at either Gallo or Wilson to prove the other ones case.

Wilson has been terrific this year and has been as consistent as anyone else on the team. I just think Gallo brings more to the table in outside threat and ability to get to the basket and the line. He just hasn't been consistent with deciding when to shoot or when to drive, but I'm in the camp that believes the consistency will come as he continues develop, in what is now a winning environment. He's been solid all year on defense and moving the ball on offense, and when he gets that consistency, I really do believe he will make that jump into all star.

Our only problem here is we have two good players and may have to give one up for a great player. Either way, I'm going to trust Donnie's judgment on this one.

i agree... it's pretty ridiculous for these discussions to always degrade into people taking pot shots at the other player just to try & make a case for the player they prefer... both these guys have proven their ability to contribute to the offense.

one thing i think u have to consider tho is the that fact that if we're getting Melo here, the opportunity for Gallo to be able to get to the FT line will go down due to lesser touches... Wilson's shot attempts will also go down as well... in the end, we should not expect either one of their production to stay at the same level if the Knicks make a trade for Melo... at that point it's all about who people feel would create better balance to the roster by holding onto them.

the argument for Gallo that he would complement Melo's game better because of his perimeter shooting ability is valid, & so is the argument that Wilson's defense & ability to play well in the 6th man's role would as well... if you hold onto Gallo then you're looking at playing Melo at the PF spot... if you hold onto Wilson u can play Melo at his natural position at the 3 & either play Wilson at the 4, or play him in the 6th man role off the bench... i'm not too confident that Gallo would excel in a 6th man role, so your options might be a little more limited in that regard if MDA wants to play around with matchups.

having shooters like Williams & Walker on the team helps to offset some of the loss in perimeter shooting if you decide to go the keep Wilson route, which is why you hear people bringing their names into the conversation... i don't think anyone really believes those guys are comparable players to Gallinari, not even the anti-Gallo posters.

They both have growing to do still. Both make plays, both make mistakes. Chandler seems to be developing quicker and developing the ability to create his own shot better than Gallo. Plus his numbers are better. So I would say Will, especially since he is more capable of playing the 4 if we go small.

honestly, look at the title of this thread.. Imean what else to expect.. I hate these discussions, butg I keep getting sucked back in.. I am going to defend gallo, not only because I think he is good, but the kid gets hated on for no reason around here... the pot shots are ridiculous, but gallo gets the brunt of them...

tkf, i hear u dude... there are a select few guys that were just dead set against Gallinari from the time he was drafted for one reason or another... still i think for the most part, people are just voicing legitimate observations about the progress in Wilson's game... when u look at the numbers, u will see that Gallo's game has not really progressed in any area from last season other than his FT attempts (which is encouraging considering we all wanted him to be more aggressive taking the ball to the basket)... still, when u look at the rest of his statline averages this year compared to last year, there seems to be little change... i think people were hoping to see more progression from him especially since we took him 6th in the draft & he came here with higher expectations... i know i did, & i've always been a guy who defended Gallo against undue criticism in the past.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/stats?playerId=3428

in contrast, when u take a look at Wilson's stats from last year & compare them to this year, u can easily see the progress he's made in his game... his 3 pt shooting % is way up from 27% to 37% which is a significant improvement, & his ppg average is up 2 pts from last season... he's also improved in his blocked shots & rebounding averages as well... the fact that he's been productive in both a 6th man's role & in the starting rotation is also a reason why people look at him as an attractive piece to hold onto... the versatility in his game gives MDA a lot of options in terms of how to set up the rotation against various teams.

Good way to sum it up. No shots at Galo intended. Like I said, I'm a big fan of his. But given the choice and based on consistent improvement I'd keep Wilson. But as someone else said, I'd give up either one, but not both.

Not going to get involved in this, but the irony is that the player you don't want to include in a trade should be the one Denver, or some other team, wants... no?

In essence, therefore, you are making the argument for the guy you like to be traded.

very well could be Pally... but Wilson's contract situation is another factor to consider here as well... Gallo is on a rookie scale salary for another season... plus another franchise may view our players differently than we as fans do... there are lots of different factors that can come into play that might make 1 guy more attractive than the other in this debate... i'm just raising the points that make Wilson more attractive as a keeper piece than Gallo from my own perspective as a fan.

good post, but I will say this, can't really judge gallo's game by numbers. I see improvement, but he is a #4 option on this team, I just don't think at this point you will see a huge jump in numbers, but what I look for is his level of play, and I seem improvement there... chandler IMO has better numbers party because he is taking more shots.. Not a knock on him, but something to be considered.. with chandlers' style of play, and lack of some offensive "skills", I think he is best suited as a 6th man... And if we get melo, we can find guys who can come in and score off the bench if needed.. but whatever..

I see him as a bit more passive this year and I am not quite sure why that is. His numbers are almost identical to last years but he is playing with a guy that demands a double or triple team on most offensive possesions. I really thought he would be the guy to have the jump in his numbers. Maybe it is because he is the fourth option but whether it was being demonstrative or aggressive he seemed to make his presence on the court known more last year.

i think both Wilson & Gallo had an equal opportunity to take hold of that #3 option role in this offense to begin the season... i'm pretty sure MDA would have wanted Gallo to be the one to take on that role, but Gallo often defers to others, sometimes to a fault... as a result his shot attempts sometimes suffers... he's getting to the FT line more this year which is great, but u gotta figure if we get Melo that Gallo will start to defer even more & won't even get the amount of shot opportunities he's getting now... in contrast, Wilson has been more assertive getting his shots off this season... maybe some of that can be attributed to his RFA status too... we might very well see the same kind of increase in Gallo's assertiveness next season when he's due to be a RFA... either way, i don't think either of these guys should be the cause of us losing out on an opportunity to get a Melo to NY.

anyway, just curious, if we were to trade Wilson for Melo, do u think MDA would roll w/Melo at the PF & Amare at C for the rest of the season?

One advantage I see to Gallo over Wilson is ball movement. At least to me, the offense seems much more fluid when Gallo is on the floor. He obviously doesn't always get the assist (he's averaging under 2 a game), but he's getting the ball where it needs to be, often making the pass that leads to the pass that leads to the bucket.

Roles are going to change if you bring a second superstar into the mix. If you can surround them with guys that will move the ball, yet are too dangerous to leave open, i.e. Gallo, you're in good shape. What I would HATE to see is us bringing in Melo only to have Gallo's game regulated to perimeter shooting (which enough of us have already complained about early on), because I believe the true strength to his game is his ability to mix it up between shooting and driving.

One problem is, no matter what combination of Gallo/Chandler/Melo we would put out there, someone's out of position. I haven't seen Melo play PF enough to know how comfortable he is at the 4. I agree with you though, Wilson would make the better 6th man. We've already seen him excel in that role. But unless we bring in another big that will send either of them to the bench, I don't think that becomes an issue.

I would not be suprised. Melo is a good rebounder this year. he is a big guy and there is not a PF in the league that can guard him. may cause some defensive problems for melo, but you know MDA would feel that melo giving up 20ppg is no problem because he would score 25 on any PF in the league trying to guard him.. and you can't switch a PF to gallo, because he will drag them out to the perimeter.. trouble anyway you see it....

Exactly!!

Why keep a 3 point specialist when you already have two guys that can stroke it better in Walker and Williams?

This just gets better and better.

weak argument.. gallo is a better player than walker or williams.. and he is abetter all around talent than chandler.. you are blowing your own argument to pieces by trying to back walker and williams.. rofl...wow...

Well yea....if I just said that Bill Walker and Shawn Williams were both better than Gallo that would be pretty dumb. But name one guy we can just pick up that can replace what Wilson does. My point was that in my view Gallo's biggest strength is his J since he has no post up moves whatsoever. He's also not as good a defender as Chandler. He gets to the rim and draws fouls, but not consistently.

Someone make an argument what Gallo brings to the table that Wilson doesn't besides just saying Gallo is better. My argument is that Wilson brings more. Doesn't mean I don't like Gallo or that I think Williams and Walker are better than him.

what does chandler do? the league is full of guys who can score 17 points on 15-17 shots... gallo has a better all around game. a cerebral game compared to chandler.. He does all of the things better that you want out of a complimentary player.. because the knicks are hell bent on getting melo.. cut chandler down to 8-10 shots per game and what do you get? think about it bro.. Gallo is a better passer, has a better handler, is a more creative offensive player, and a good defender , just as good as chandler.. Not sure why chandler defense is being overrated around here, although he is a solid defender on big guys...

the choice is easy for me.. gallo can and is getting 15ppg on just 10 shots.. melo is going to cut into everyone's shots... give me gallo..

He gets to the rim and draws fouls, but not consistently.

haha.. he shoots 5.5 FTs per game.. second to only amare on the knicks.... are you kidding me? not consistent?

I think Will is a better player (right now), but Gallo is a much better fit for that team. Of course when it comes to Melo nobody cares about what the fit or the role is, only that he's the key to winning a title in NY just like in Denver so its kind of whatever.

Chandler is good, but tfk is right... Maggette, Richard Jefferson, Salmons... there are a lot of guys like that in the league.

Myself... I dont want to lose EITHER.

On a side note... Melo vs Spurs last night 5-17, 12 pts, 5 rebs, 4 TOs.

Someone please explain to me how such a statline is possible. Thats positively Gallo-like

Gallo may become a borderline All Star, while Chandler already is a borderline All Star...

here's what Amare says:
"[Gallinari] provides a lot for us," Amar'e Stoudemire said. "He stretches the offense out there, makes teams guard on the perimeter. He's an offensive threat and he's a great defender for his size. He's very versatile."

and some stats:
Stoudemire's individual performance has slowed since Gallinari was injured on Jan. 2. He's averaging 24.3 points this month, down from 29.8 in December. Stoudemire's shooting percentage also has dropped, from 53.6 to 40.6.

Yup. Gallo's rep alone opens things up for Amare and Felton. I am obviously a Gallo fan but I don't want to lose both.

Gallos game can be more easily replaced than Wilsons. See Bill Walker and Shawn Williams. Not as good of players but Bill rebounds better and Williams has a better 3pt shot.

Doesn't mean I don't like Gallo or that I think Williams and Walker are better than him.

exactly. and i LIKE chandler, I used to defend him as a player from day 1.. but in this case, I hink gallo has the skillset to be a special player.. now it is up to him to get there, but I see he has the size and skillset.. chandler is a good player, but I see more of his type in this league.. you mentioned a few, and right now, I would not trade gallo for any of those guys...

This could be due to overuse as much as it has to do with Gallo not playing.
