It's not up to the Nuggets really, though they may try to get the press and fans to believe that. If Melo is not willing to sign paper, the Nuggets have no say in the matter.
They can trade him to anyone willing to give up assets though, even if he refuses to sign an extension.
exactly... which is why we can't just present the Nuggets with some insulting offer like Curry, AR & cash + 2nd rd picks for Melo in a trade... we have to come with at least enough of an offer so that other teams that would be willing to give up 1st round picks to get him for even a rental won't be able to outbid us... that means we'll have to include at least 1 of our top young guys at the bare minimum.
I think we start at Chandler, Curry, 1st round pick, second round pick, and $3 mill and we stop at Chandler, Douglas, Walker, Curry, 1st round pick, second round pick, and $3 mill. I would fight hard to keep Fields and either Gallo or Chandler.
If it came down to it, I'd trade Chandler, Gallo, Curry and a pick for Anthony. I'm holding onto Fields as he is the only legit 2 gaurd we have. If we sign Melo in the summer we lose Chandler anyway, and with Melo here, I dont see Gallo physically holding up at the PF position and would probably have to go the bench anyway.
