No problem with releasing Mason -- if we do that though, I'm bringing up a C/PF or PG (in that order), not PEJ. Gimme someone like C Chris Johnson, Courtney Sims or PG Curtis Stinson or even Orien Greene.. I even like Trey Johnson or Paul Harris if we were ever on the lookout for another 2...Power to this kid though, he's gone down to the DL and worked hard -- I hope he gets a crack somewhere..Guys that go down to the DL w/o an NBA contract and work their tail off deserve to get rewarded..Unfortunately for us, there are guys at other positions of need that I'd call up from the NBDL over Ewing Jr.
Make no mistake about it --- there's a bunch of solid FA talent down in the DL that can help out an NBA team..Guys that you can go get immediately that wouldn't require assets or compromise the salary cap to get..All different types of players -- bigs, PGs, wings, offensive players, defenders, rebounders...If a move didn't work out, if that particular call up was overwhelmed or in over his head, you cut them & go in a different direction in only 10 days..If a move did work out however, you look like a genius..No drawback whatsoever..I can't possibly see an argument against going this route, esp if you're a team like the Knicks, a team that could obviously use some bench improvements but also needs to retain their assets and cap space for much larger/difference-making moves when the time comes.. Generally, all it would require is a little roster management (jettison someone on an NBA roster that doesn't make a lot of money and isn't contributing) and then a little faith by the coach to use the callup..I just wished the Knicks realized this and utilized it. Ask Golden State how this works -- they continually find useful players year after year, Reggie Williams being their latest, perhaps best example..That guy plays on an all-star level at times...How'd Earl Barron work out for us last year? Looks like there are many others out there who are patiently awaiting their turn.
