the Clippers play in the SAME ARENA as the Lakers and will always be also rans. no one cares about these teams. the Nyets drew 1000 fans in the dead of winter last year. that's sad. that probably won't happen in Brooklyn, but they'll never eclipse the Knicks in terms of fan attention.

I agree, and I don't agree.

In the near term, there's no way the Nyets will draw a fan base comprised of NYK fans. But down the road, if the Knicks don't build a title contender and the Nyets do, then I could see in ten or fifteen years the Nyets becoming the new top team in NYC. Ditto for LA. But I am talking down the road and after a monumental turn of events.

Of course, the chances of all of that happening are basically nill.

the likelyhood of the brooklyn nets being a top team in attendance and merchandise, is very high.

new yorkers like shiny new things, i have seen new yorkers line up around the corner for a new burrito place. line up for blocks and blocks for a new broadway show, hell man i have seen them sleep on the sidewalk overnite for a new best buy sale.

Haha, word up. If they stick a Trader Joe's in Barclays, it's a wrap!

this isnt a new droid phone... following a sports team and then paying $100 to see a game is a big deal for the average joe, and thats what brk/qns is full off. Where is that fan support coming from? There are no Nets fans in Brooklyn.

Peter Luger's is in Brooklyn and don't even take credit cards. They don't seem to be struggling.

You make it seem like BK/QNS is just full of Ralph Kramden & Archie Bunkers. There's tons of people, money, companies (well, recession considering) and transplants there who seem to burst with "Brooklyn the Planet" pride the day they move there.

I only go to 1-2 MSG games a year (and not on my dime if I can help it). I see as many or more Nets games because they are cheaper and easier to get, and I like to watch NBA basketball live.

new yorkers love new, it`s our crack. the first year of a new nba team in new york will be a hot ticket.

follow that with new name/new uni/new franchise player, there will be lots of new brooklyn merch sold.

Nets don't have to trump the knicks to be successful.

The Clips have a huge mountain to climb to get over the Lakers. Knicks had a 5 game winning streak and we all full of Knick pride now?

Dodgers lefte some 50 years ago. Same for Giants. Big new fresh virgin territory. Moses could not build two new stadiams and he wanted one in queens that became Shea. Plain and simple. Really, we let them go.

There is plenty to read about this.

Its not just brooklyn, its the whole metro area. If Knicks had the same juice as the Lakers the Nets might be in Kansas City by now.

If they win, they will flock. I think from a business stand point its a brilliant move.

They don't have to pay the knicks a dime to cross the bridge.

Knicks need to worry about the knicks. IF both teams succeed EVERYBODY wins!!!

The Mecca thing is way past its prime. Not since the NIT was the main tournament has NY hoops been that important. Sure the Knicks Willis-Clyde era were kings but NYC hoops was really about the college games.

People who claim the Nets will just be the Clips are short-sighted. The Clippers are the Clippers cause they've had 2 decades of being an awful lottery-bound team, while their sister team is the cream of the league.

Can the Knicks say the same?

The only way the Nets/Knicks situation even resembles the Clips/Lakers is if the Knicks regain prominence while the Nets are mired in the lottery/mediocrity for two decades. Even then, NY is more than twice the size of LA, and Nets/Knicks aren't even sharing the same building like the Clippers and Lakers do.

Again, I ask, if the Nets moved to Brooklyn 10 years ago, while the Knicks sucked ass, and the Nets were thriving with Kidd, KMart, and Jefferson...who knows how the balance of power would've shifted? Hell, how popular would they have been when they had Kidd and Vince in his prime? Nets have sucked cause NJ sucks. Moving to Brooklyn is a smart move.

there is still the fact that players don't want to play for the nets.... if the knicks have money to spend and the nets have the same.... the knicks have STAT... MSG will also be a new arena by 2013.... if I'm a all star caliber player I'm choosing the knicks the big lights, Broadway.... What is Brooklyn known for??

at the end of the day its a win win for melo.

he either joins a title run with the knicks or is the face and franchise player of his brooklyn birth.

melo should really send a thank you card to lebron for being such a dumbass.

I live in Brooklyn, right down the street from where they are building this thing. I can tell you I will definitely be at that arena - when the Knicks come to play, otherwise I will be watching basketball on TV or if I am lucky at MSG.

the hilarious part is how many so called analysts and haters (charles barkley) picked the Nets to be better than us. Sir Charles actually had them in the playoffs. That's just turible

not true Knick fans. Knick fans are true fans who, if we didn't bolt during the Isiah/Layden era's then not even the black plague could keep us away from our beloved Knicks.

Nah, more like thanks to Jerseys fake ass fans who refused to by tickets even when their teams was going to the finals.

I see where your going :) - NY = relevance, or so the Nets ownership believes. Also, they feel IF they aren't playing in the swamp, they might be able to get someone to sign with them.
