If those are the two pieces you're talking about, I'm on board. I would pass on a chance at Melo to get Mayo and Thompson.
Mayo and Gallo playing complimentary ball, to me, is much better than Melo fighting double teams for a bad jump shot.
So, if Mayo and Thompson are the two pieces, I say sign me up.
How about Melo and Gallo playing complimentary ball ?
i can't really see it. both are true small forwards and need the ball on the elbow/corner area. oj mayo can operate on the wing and penetrate the middle and shoot from outside.
Gallo's offense is 3's and now getting to the line from drives or headfakes. Which a lot of times starts at the 3 point line. Melo's offense is mid range shot and drives to get to the line. I doubt they would get in each other's way. Yes, they play the same position, but they would cause some crazy mismatches on the offense, if both are on the floor. So, pass on Melo to get Mayo? No thank you.
I can see it working on the offensive end. Melo posting up, drawing the usual double, kicking it out to Gallo at 3, or Amare at the high post, or Fields cutting from the weakside...they'd make a deadly triangle.
The problem would be on defense. None of them are good perimeter defenders...all of 'em are slow to close out shooters and have difficulty keeping quick guards in front of them (Gallo has a slight advantage cause he usually falls back and uses his height to frustrate smaller guards) Unless Gallo shows any ability to play the PF, ala Dirk, and move Amare to center on occasion, I don't really see how those 3 can mesh defensively. Even with Gallo at the 4, and Amare at the 5...that would get abused as much as Chandler/Amare is getting abused now (probably worse).
