KG Disputes Villanueva’s “Cancer Patient” Allegation
November 3rd, 2010 by Brian Robb Leave a reply » Kevin Garnett just released a statement through the Celtics commenting on the earlier Twitter allegation by Charlie Villanueva in which he accused Villanueva of calling him a “cancer patient:”
“I am aware there was a major miscommunication regarding something I said on the court last night, my comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact, ‘You are cancerous to your team and our league.’ I would never be insensitive to the brave struggle that cancer patients endure. I have lost loved ones to this deadly disease and have a family member currently undergoing treatment. I would never say anything that distasteful. The game of life is far bigger than the game of basketball.”
A couple things on the statement. First and foremost, I believe Garnett. He owned up to saying cancer, making Villanueva look a bit more credible. I was surprised by the intital allegation despite his history of trash talk and perhaps even more surprised by KG staying silent for awhile, making me believe the comment was true.
With the disputation out now though, it’s disappointing KG couldn’t get this statement out of the way a few hours earlier. Obviously with the team traveling home late last night, the C’s possibly weren’t even aware of the situation and bad publicity for KG until at some point earlier today. A statement earlier though would have likely helped put a stop to the firestorm of criticism that came KG’s way in the interim. Now, some of that could linger, though it shouldn’t.
CelticsHub will be live at the Garden tonight however and will keep you posted on any further comments from KG on the situation.
