what is bare bones to you? if u can get Melo while still keeping at least 1 of Gallo, AR or Wilson & either Fields or Douglas, do u think Amare, Melo, Felton, Gallo/AR/Wilson, Turiaf, Azabuike, Walker, Mozgov & Fields/Douglas is a bare bones roster? personally i think that's a pretty significant upgrade over what we have now.

Word, it's an upgrade, but it leaves us with very little flexibility to improve the team beyond there. Whereas a newly signed FA Melo would leave us with oodles of options to further improve, notably by trading the assets we didn't trade for Melo to acquire a third star (e.g., CP3, Williams) to complete our roster. Maybe we even still keep one or two of our high ceiling yoots, too.

You're right that my plan is riskier. But sometimes you gotta play the hand that sets you up best in the long-term instead of going for the more sure thing. Still, if we could keep Gallo/AR, Douglas and Fields, I'd probably be inclined to pull the trigger now.

We should give up Gallo OR AR, Chandler, Curry, $3mil and our 2014 to land Melo. But not ANYTHING more. Doubtful that the Nuggs will like that deal unless it's the second week of February. Even then, I'm not so sure.

Wilson will have to be traded or renounced this summer if they need to clear room to sign Melo, so scratch him off the remaining players list for next season... also you're taking the risk that Gallo & AR have disappointing seasons & their value goes down... i'm not saying it WILL happen, but there is that chance... if we trade for Melo, we can still be left with enough cap space to sign an impact FA this summer... let's say we have to give up Gallo, Wilson, TD, Turiaf, Curry's expiring & both our 2nd rounders for Melo & filler (Carter & Ely's expirings)... that leaves the Knicks with about $7-8M worth of cap space to sign another FA like Joel Pryzbilla this summer, along with this in 2011:

C - Pryzbilla
PF - Amare
SF - Melo
SG - Fields
PG - Felton
6 - AR
7 - Walker
8 - Mozgov
9 - Rautins

now let's say that Denver insists on a 1st round pick being included & we end up having to trade AR to get one from another team... that leaves the Knicks with about $10-11M worth of cap space to sign another FA this summer, putting us in the Marc Gasol range... if Memphis would match, then maybe go after Nene who Melo has experience playing with & can rebound & block shots in the lane... or maybe you sign Andrei Kirilenko to shore up your perimeter & help defense & fill the role left vacated by AR? or maybe you target Caron Butler to fill the role left by Wilson/Gallo? the point is, there are plenty of options open to us to improve our team even if we give up a boatload of our youth to get Melo here... the hardest thing to do is to get your hands on bonafide superstar players... Melo is a superstar player in my eyes.

Am I wrong about the NBA's fiscal strength?

MSG is not your typical arena and can make money from multiple sources. The NBA is doing this to give the more average franchises a better deal.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

I hear you. And I agree that perhaps we will see Fields basically step up and fill Chandler's shoes. Not sure it will happen this season, but he definitely shows promise. Doubt we can keep Wilson no matter what if we're getting Melo.

It's a tough call to abandon our young guys when they show such potential, just to add a roleplayer. I get what you're saying about the potential of adding an impact player with our remaining cap. Maybe a role player like Pryz would be the way to go.

My gut tells me to stick with the yoots we got for now. Once we see where they are headed, we might need to reassess our options. Right now, the lineup you described above looks pretty good, better than what we have. But later, once Gallo, AR, Fields, Moz, and Douglas mature this season, the equation will change. They will be closer to the type of players they will become. It will be clearer which we should retain for our new dream team.

Until Melo gives the nod that he would sign someplace else, I'm inclined to hold pat. He's basically saying "I Want You" to us by not agreeing to sign elsewhere. If he starts to cozy up to Chicago or Houston Or Orlando, we make our best offer and see what Denver says.

The difference of opinion between those of us who want to trade now versus those of us who want to be patient is based on the perceived level of interest Melo has to play home games in The Garden. I think that's all he wants, to shine for the next five years playing with his homey, Stat. If so, he will continue to resist overtures from other teams.

Money will be plentiful, regardless of CBA, because he will be a max-contract, mega-endorsing, muhfugging Carmelo Anthony playing alongside Amare Stoudamire in The Garden. Spike will drive the PR machine into a frenzy, with some sick advertising. We will be within a move of our objective with the cards to keep playing. We will be in a position (asset-wise) to take a shot at CP3 (or Deron) to complete the squad. But we would need trade assets to do it, so only Melo can determine if the wedding-day dream can come true. He knows this for sure, so do his reps and other peeps.

im 100% behind a deal that plays out like that or similiar, I know i was behind the DW gamble for 2 max saleries but im not with gambling on melo coming here or not, The DW trade we had nothing in place and it was worth the gamble IMO, now that we have the essential pieces in place with amare, we have to try to construct the team to be a contender and not just settle for mediocrity.

I know a lot of members on this forum are against trading for melo and they have every right to feel such things, melo has stated he wants new york and if we wait it can very well become a reality without breaking up the talent donnie has worked for, but my view is we have one shot at this, and one shot only, lebron, wade, bosh are all off the table, the plan has always been for 2 max contracts, we can wait it out and possibly be rewarded and that would be ideal, but if we miss out on him donnie will be stuck trying mix & match pieces together that work.

this is all just an opinion of course...

I don't think waiting it out will result in our losing Melo. I think he will be a Knick next year, either through a sensible trade or via FA. Bidding against ourselves would be foolish unless some other team verges on trumping us. No such team currently exists.
