What a waste of cap space 4mm bucks for him---we basically gave up pick 7 and this years pick for Roger mason JR who could not shoot 40% with Tim Duncan in the pivot. that means subtract 5% from 38 and you will find his shooting % here.

unfortunately for Mason he has gotten consistent minutes and open looks and has done nada.

So now pre-season counts?

oohah

never said it did, just that he has done nothing with consistent minutes and open looks. As a pro player, you should be able to hit a basket once in a while if that's your specialty.

Mason had one good season as a shooter when he got a bunch of minutes. Honestly, he is just a guy who can bring the ball up and stick an open jumper enough to keep the other team honest. He is not a serious rotation player on a good team. I actually like him, but not for basketball reasons, he appears to be a good dude. I would trade him in 2 seconds flat.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

He is also coming off a sub-par season, and I think there was talk about a hand injury contributing to his shooting problems. For me he needed to show something this pre-season, and for a guy whose specialty is supposed to be the 3, his shooting has been miserable.

Yeah I didn't get that either..Can you clarify that Briggy. We got this guy for minimal risk -- 1 yr, $1.4M. That's it. Unfortunately he's showing very little whereas Fields is really impressing and has been impressing right from game 1 of summer ball. Mike doesn't owe Mason anything. It's a competition and he hasn't earned anything over Fields. To me Fields has flat out won the backup swingman spot. It's not even close..Heck you can make a good case that he should be starting although Chandler has played well so far this preseason..

I would bring Fields along slowly in terms of minutes, but if what we've seen of him so far is legit, I would hope to see him getting 20-25 minutes by the middle of the season, especially if his jumper ever becomes a consistent weapon, and some of his man/man defensive weaknesses are remedied.

http://nbaplaybook.com/2010/09/16/can-he-bounce-back-roger-mason/?utm

In 2008-2009 he shot 36.0% of his threes from the left corner, nailing 43.5%
In 2008-2009 he shot 18.5% of his threes from straightaway, and he hit 36.1%
In 2008-2009 he shot 46.5% of his threes from the right corner, nailing 44.6%

So clearly, this is a man who makes his living in the corners, especially the right.

In 2009-2010 he shot 35.2% of his threes from the left corner, hitting 32.2%
In 2009-2010 he shot 22.3% of his threes from straightaway, making just 22.0%
In 2009-2010 he shot 42.5% of his threes from the right corner, nailing 41.3%

So the conclusion I draw from these stats is he should take more threes in the right corner.

And never from straight on.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Im thinking he can be a nice ornament on the bench until NY finds someone much younger in the d league who can grow with the team--weve got a lot of salary latitude---this guy was a mistake signing.

A mistake signing who shoots 41.3% in the corner (in a down year).
That oughtta be good for a few game-winners.

Not just an ornament. When the game is on the line and we have possession, Mason will be on the floor. Maybe as a decoy, but still valuable for what he is being paid.

Mason was an insurance signing. We didn't know if or when AZ would fully recover, so we had to add some shooting depth. I think Mike would have no problem sitting him if he doesn't get it together soon. He was just a vet insurance place holder anyway. He's there in case of no AZ or if Walker, Fields etc. didn't show up either. All of his vet savvy will be useless if he's not hitting shots.

I don't know if he always shot like this, but he has one of the flattest shots i've seen. It's great when it goes in, but if its just a little off it's got no chance of going in with that low trajectory.
