NBADraft.net Scouting Report In Disguise

Weaknesses: He lacks athleticism, size and strength, which hurt him on both ends when comparing him to other shooting guards at the next level ...

Rebuttal. Rautins isn't playing shooting guard. Athleticism is over rated

Weaknesses: He does not have the quickest first step, which really makes him nothing more than catch and shoot threat when it comes to scoring ...

Rebuttal. (from strengths) "He has an excellent basketball IQ, along with tremendous court vision, his passing skills can sometimes go overlooked"

Weaknesses: Just like any pure shooter, Andy gets a little streaky from the outside, and since he has trouble creating for himself...

Rebuttal. (from strength) "He needs minimal space to get off his shot, while having enough range to knock down threes with ease"

Weaknesses: You don't see him finish around the basket that much, mainly because he never gets there unless it's in transition ...

(see above)

Weaknesses: His ball handling skills are average to above average, although it’s not a true strength of his game ...

Rebuttal. He makes the pass in the right spot

Weaknesses: He is not quick enough to guard the 1 ...

Rebuttal. He is not playing the one (from strengths) "He is an above average defender, with quick hands and an ability to read passing lanes"

He lining up at SF now is he?

Rautins is playing well. Hopefully he gets some burn. Maybe d'A will say "don't force it up next time....pass"

Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

D'Antoni is talking about an eight man rotation now. I don't see anyway Rautins cracks that. 12 minutes in the preseason, a good open practice and a horrible summer league don't equal making the top 8 on this team.

Last I heard he was still looking at 9-10. Where did you read he was going all the way down to only 8? I really don't see any way that he'd change his mind that drastically so soon.

"I play them one at a time"

nixluva - Mike D'Antoni is probably as annoyed as many other coaches are by reporters who attempt to probe what they are thinking.

The same beat writers who try to predict rotations will turn around and talk out of the other side of their necks about "in game adjustments"

You can't win

With all that said, Andy Rautins makes a sweet off-rhythm pass to guys in stride. He may get a bit fancy with it at times but so what?

Let's watch how he builds on his ability to see the floor, one baby step at a time.
