Of course the Pacers are probably pissed off because he was "smart" enough to sign a 2 year contract for $1.5M before he did this.

Funny- I thought, and still think, that a lot of guys around here were overrating his ability on the court, but now it turns out I was overlooking his "inability" off the court.

There are probably reasons for him leaving school early that go beyond his belief that he was ready to play in the NBA. If he made the next step in progressing as a college player, and stayed clean, he would have been a potential mid-1st Rnd. pick, and if he is as good as some of you think he is, he might have been a late lottery pick.

I wonder if he would have been able to do what Jennings did in Europe. If he had been able to hack it for a year in Euro ball, it probably would have helped him more that playing at a college where you figure he had some kind of cream-puff degree created for him and tutors on demand. I expect that he must have realized he could BS his way through a year of college better than dealing with the ownership of a European team, which would have kicked his butt off the continent if he caused any trouble over there.

You play the percentages when you take a chance on a "bad character" player. He might turn out fine- but there is always the chance that he will be a loser.

In 2 years, this kid, who could have been a student of mine if I had been at Lincoln, will make more $$ than I will have made in my entire, soon to be finished, teaching career, and he can't even play a bloody exhibition game under contract before screwing up.

He may yet turn things around, but think about all the extra opportunities he would have had to get in trouble if the Knicks had taken him and he was able to hang out in NYC all the time.

We dodged a bullet when Donnie decided not to take this guy.

Hmmm...wonder if she told him he was going to get splinters now that Collison was in town.

c'mon dude. most men have the physical advantage over most women anyway. this dude is a 6'5" 210lb professional athlete. whether or not that woman was talking ****, or hitting him, he had the strength to physically subdue her without beating on her or throwing her down the stairs. not to mention, he always has the option of walking away.

i don't get the age angle either. i don't think it bears any relevance. sure a 19 year old is less mature, but this is a deep-seated moral character issue. people should inherently know that it's not right to physically attack someone who is at a great physical disadvantage and poses no legitimate threat to them.

It's all cultural stuff.
In some cultures and nations women treated like dogs.
That’s why this people and nations are primitive.
This guy is also primitive. World moving forward and these guys are still in Stone Age.

He deserves a second chance. He is only 19 years old. He should have known better. Look at Chris Brown his careen is just about gone. Look years ago men would kick their womans ass and it wouldn't be a bleep in the news. Don't the NBA have classes on this stuff.

Um, hello? How many second chances is he gonna get??

He had been considered a first-round talent but dropped to the second round due to off-the-court issues, including a 2008 bust for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl inside of Lincoln High School.

I find it hard to believe that he threw her down the stairs. Like you said he's huge. The article didn't say it was reported that he beat her and then threw her down the stairs. If the police report/charges say that's what he did than that is different. This to me sounds like it was an argument in a staircase and she fell in a struggle. I find it hard to believe he threw her like Jazzy Jeff on the fresh prince of belair.

I think anyone that hits a female is scum but this doesn't seem like its that serious. I think its a shame how you guys can get bent out of shape and all the facts aren't in.

Surprised that people have not connected the dots between the the incident which just happened and the one in Lincoln HS.

The guy is a punk and a bully, and seems to have a major issue with women.

Lance Stephenson, Indiana Pacers NBA player, arrested for pushing his girlfriend down the stairs

Coney Island basketball star Lance Stephenson - a second-round pick of the Indiana Pacers in the June NBA draft - was busted yesterday for pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, cops said.

Stephenson, 19, a legendary player at Brooklyn's Abraham Lincoln High School, roughed up Jasmine Williams, 21, at her Brooklyn apartment building about 5 a.m., police said.

The 6-foot-5 rookie point guard's cowardly shove sent Williams - the mother of Stephenson's child - tumbling headfirst down 10 steps, requiring her to be treated at a hospital for injuries to her head and neck, cops said.

It was not clear what prompted the violence, which stunned Stephenson's former youth league coach, Joe Packer.

"It's a shame because everything seemed to be going so well," Packer said, referring to the couple's relationship.

Stephenson, who played one year at the University of Cincinnati before getting drafted 40th overall by the Pacers, was hit with a felony rap of second-degree assault, cops said.

He was also booked on charges of third-degree assault, harassment and menacing. Prosecutors added a charge of criminal possession of a weapon, but a spokesman could not specify what the weapon was.

Stephenson had been considered a first-round talent but dropped to the second round due to off-the-court issues, including a 2008 bust for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl inside Lincoln High School.

Following his arrest yesterday, Stephenson met with his agent, Alberto Ebanks, Packer said. Ebanks represented the troubled star in his 2008 arrest, which was resolved when he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Stephenson, who inked a deal with the Pacers that will reportedly pay him $700,000 for the upcoming season, was a scoring machine at Lincoln, finishing his high school career as the leading scorer in New York State history.

He won four city championships while at Lincoln, making him an heir to the Coney Island hoops tradition established by former NBA star Stephon Marbury and current member of the Minnesota Timberwolves Sebastian Telfair.

"All I'm saying is he's a kid."

EnySpree - all I'm sayin' is that Stephenson is a punk. if he is old enough to have a professional career, he is MORE than old enough to understand you don't physically impose your will on a woman in any form. Giving him a free pass is what sets dudes like football player Fred Lane (shot and killed by his old lady), Carolina Panthers Rae Carruth (with his murdered girl friend), Pac Man Jones (flaunting his duffel bag of cash in a strip club that leads to a murder), Santonio Holmes (domestic violence and assault - the Judge dismissed charges) on the wrong path. They stay on that wrong path for life because people that hold forgiving opinions like yours make excuses for them. The excuses make the behavior acceptable. What part of that is giving you trouble?

"This women probably is his first girlfriend."

EnySpree - are you channeling Dr Laura or what?

On March 10, for former San Antionio Spurs star Alvin Robertson was arrested in Arkansas as one of seven people tied to a child sex trafficking operation which kidnapped a 14-year-old girl and forced her into prostitution and stripping. You really want to excuse violence against women and girls?

"I'm assuming they were arguing in the staircase and he probably accidentally pushed her."

EnySpree - you had me at "I'm assuming" No sale dude.

"Regardless all young people go through this type of thing. He just happened to be the one to have this happen."

EnySpree - "he just happened to be he one to have this happen"? WTF does that jacked up ish mean?

Your stance is indefensible and you know it.

This is the part that I always question-- regardless of the person, the act, etc... having the right to get paid the salaries that these guys get paid to play a game is a f---ing privilege, not a right. It shouldn't be taken lightly. Papabear-- what's your rule-- one free wife or girlfriend beating before we take significant action? He's just a kid? Then stop letting him play in the NBA until he becomes a man. I don't need to pay to see guys like this. F--- him. There are plenty of talented players that would love to have his spot. These guys should be earning their salary on and off the court.

You know I gonna spin wit it

1st things 1st - let the legal system do its job. when we find out what that verdict is i think we can then have an informed discussion of what we think consequences should be, and how the nba should react.

Isn't there a Chris Rock sketch? About not hitting a woman, but he would shake her? Doesn't matter if we've "all been there (Enyspree)". There is no excuse for striking a woman or pushing her down the stairs. Especially if it's your baby's momma. I grew up in the projects in Brooklyn and to this day I have never struck a woman or pushed her down a flight of stairs, so the "culture" argument is flawed. And people should know the difference between right and wrong at 19. You can vote, you can die for the country, and you can have sex legally.

Either way I was upset we didn't draft him, and now I am happy we didn't.

James Dolan wants trash. Isiah brings in trash. The organization becomes trash.

Simple formula that transformed us from a blue collar hard working franchise that always left it on the floor to a bunch of hood rats that didn't care and don't try.

It's great to have guys like Turiaf, Amare, Buke, Felton, Gallo and TD. Amazing the owner wanted to destroy all the goodwill Donnie created.

Say no to anyone from Lincoln at all costs. It is going to be suprising to everyone in the media how good and close this team will be.

Good Job Walsh. At 19 I think most of us had enough sense to know what wrong and right was so I don't buy the his just a kid argument. He is what he is and his character is a testament of that over the past years. This tiger will not change his stripes. But I also feel that the full truth is not written just as Wilson Chandlers case. A lot of fabrication is probably involved in this story. Journalists are like that.

All I know is there's two side's to every story, but society only wants to here the child or the womans side.

I'm in no way an advocate for beating or hitting woman, but if a chic is kicking me, spitting in my face, swinging at me, trying to scratch my eyes out, i may give her a good shove. I'm sure he wasn't trying to hurt her much, she just happen to be at the top of the stairs when the shoving occured.

Just looking at how it may have happen
