For cardio I swim a mile 4 times a week. That helps with strength but only the swimmer muscles (i.e., shoulders, back, hammies, top part of the quads). I don't do butterfly so I miss the core strengthening it would provide. I do a few hundred crunches three times a week just to keep my belly from flabbing out. But that doesn't help with the weight.

I am thinking about getting P90x as I need to lose 25 lbs (target weight is 195) and if there's one problem with swimming it's that it really builds the appetite. I eat healthy (organic produce and meats) but just eat too much (i.e., portion control is hard because I got solid skills in the kitchen).

My wife started swimming a couple of years ago and has trimmed her body down to extreme hotness, so I am intent on busting a move on a weight loss regimen. Sounds like P90x did the trick for you guys as far as slimming down is concerned.

Dude, how can you swim 4 miles a week and not lose weight?

Two reasons: It adds muscle weight AND it greatly increases appetite, so my caloric intake remains too high to lose pounds. I would probably shed some pounds if I stopped drinking and ate less fatty foods and a lot fewer carbs. That's the hard part.

I do a lot of x-country skiing in the winter, and that usually helps me lose a few pounds. But that activity is dependent on snow staying around, which isn't a common occurrence where I live. Last winter was particularly awful.

glad you asked. i went from 5'9" 137lbs last year to 154lbs now. i'm still working on gaining. my body fat is around 8%. glad you didn't ask about my financials. i'm in the best physical shape of my life. my physical fitness and my financial fitness have an inverse relationship

so i added 17lbs of mostly muscle just by doing calisthenics. 90 push-ups, 120 sit-ups, 90 dips, and 60 pull-ups. i do that workout in 30 minutes.

plus, i play basketball 2-3 times a week.

i'm trying to get to 165. it'll probably take another year.

good luck everyone. in my own personal experience i find that consistently working out brings more results over the long term than overexertion. overexertion tends to burn people out and causes them to quit. i have literally worked out 90% of the last 365 days. it's a lot easier to do that when your workout is only 30 minutes. the results aren't coming fast, but most people overestimate how much they can do in a year and underestimate how much they can do in ten.

when i need extra reps, i listen to this:

Congrats, Eny!

I'm down nearly 20 lbs. Been going to the gym 4-5 times a week since early May.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Yeah man the computer is a killer. You can blow hours doing whatever you like to do. You can take 30 mind out and reduce your calories and you can make a change. Notice I said calories you can lose weight eating junk as long as you stay around 2000-2400 calories. I know cuz that's what I did Lol. Its ok to go off the deep end as long as you wear a life vest. there were days where I had to eat donuts so I bought 25 munchkins from Duncan donuts and that's all I ate for a day along with water and diet soda. No lie!!! I still stayed in the calorie range. I don't suggest you do that often but you can do this and learn to start eating better and more responsibly.

If you have a android phone or ipod touch/iphone they have apps that help you calculate everything you eat. You can use that to monitor yourself. You can also use them to calculate what you eat now. I did that and realized I was eating 4000 calories or more sometimes in a day. I was averaging about 3000 or so except I wasn't working out. No wonder I was fat! There's always a way. Diet is the hardest thing to master.

I change my workout all the time. The only thing that stays consistent is that run, at least, 3x weeks. That doesnt include Soccer practice 3x a week in the afternoon and the occasional BJJ training. I'm at 6' 180lb

A few weeks ago I stopped lifting weights and started following this workout 4x a week. Its a killer..very similar to p90x. One major difference is the instructor is a lot better to look at

I'm not sure I could maintain my workout habits on 2000 calories. I am most likely close to 5000 on a swim day. You're right about one thing: Cutting calories is the hardest part of losing pounds. Ugghhh!

She sounds either Polish or Russian, but either way she is FINE! Someone might have to add her to ALBA just for those insane abs.

great point, and this is the #1 thing that messes w/ my woman. She's about 20 pounds over where she wants to be. She is in great shape and works out a ton but the more you work out the hungrier you get.

It really comes down to 2 things. Pick an exercise you enjoy enough to keep doing. No matter how great the regime is if you hate it eventually you will bail. I LOVE putting the phones on and lifting weights. I HATE cardio, especially indoors.

Also find where your empty calories are and cut them out. Candy, chips, breads, beer... you get the idea. Cant quit everything at once but if you have 3 Sierra Nevada's a night (about 240 calories) try switching to Amstel Lite for awhile. Thats 400 calories a day gone. That kind of stuff is huge

if your cutting calories manage your hunger with food that burn slow. Check the glycimic (sp?) index. I know peanuts dont have a lot of calories and they have a lot of protien. A handfull will curb the hunger and give you good energy.

I seriously would like some info on it. Its seems ridiculous as a way to actually gain the muscle that the shake weight commercial suggests...but as a way to travel and still be able to get it in...or to get it in when you don't have time or the equipment around to do what you have to do.

I have had various injuries over the year where I have had to shut down the workouts for months at a time. Sometimes I just let the body rest and heal. I think one of the biggest things that keeps me lean is the walking I do for my commute. 15 mins each way (30 mins total) at as brisk a pace as I can go. It makes such a different. When I am sore it stretches me out. When I am sloth is gets some blood moving.

My point is just do *something* every day.

how about people who walks to get a gyro. they are moving too....bowels that is

Just swam a fast mile and a half (UK inspired me) and now I am totally starving. How am I supposed to resist the temptation to eat a big dinner (grilled sesame teriyaki chicken, grilled squash, zucchini, beets, onions, yellow peppers and eggplant, and pasta with pesto, grana padano and baby orange cherry tomatoes) with a margarita or two on the side? Losing weight is really going to be tough. If I eat only 1500 calories right now I think I might wither away.

** Success ** Well, at least I cut out the margaritas. That probably chops the calories down a bunch.

Damn, that's a hell of a dinner dude, I'm sitting here housing a bag of baby carrots. Maybe cut out the pasta? I also co-sign the handful of peanuts idea. There are a bunch of strategies: eating a handful of nuts, whole grains & vegetables make you feel full quicker, longer, and are great for your system. Eating slowly as well allows you to better monitor when you've become full. With a meal like that I bet that either 1) there's a point where you will get full and you are just continuing to eat on principle, or 2) there's a certain level of hunger you are still going to have after all of that because your metabolism is cranked and then it comes down to impulse control. I think the Chinese have a saying that you never want to eat more than 80% full... you always want to leave a little room in there. Good luck man!

most people that really stick to p90x seem to all shed about 30lbs. good work bro.

153 is light to me at 5'9". why did you want to lose that much weight.

I'm 186lbs as of this morning...I'm trying to hover around 175-185lbs...my concern now is body fat and becoming more functionally strong. I'm trying to be able to punch someone really hard and be able to run like the wind if I don't knock them out, lol
