Yup... as long as there is no GM job for him in the future, and any GM we eventually pick up is OK with him being around.
Dolan has the dough, and this is just Dolan being loyal and giving Thomas a personal service contract. No big deal, but I actually think it makes the organization seem better in the eyes of outsiders. No need to burn this bridge. The more good relationships you have with people, the more chance you might benefit from them someday.
There were some stories about Steinbrenner being thrown around after he died. One person indicated that George "fired" a number of folks during the years who he would keep on the payroll as scouts, consultants, whatever. The loyalty thing was important to him, it would seem, and he felt a need to make sure that people who had served him well would be taken care of even after he replaced them.
