yeah, for most casual viewers, the christmas day games are the first time each season they pay attention to basketball and then not really until after the super bowl does the NBA hit the national conscience, i don't think. some might even argue it's more like the playoffs.

but that might change with the heat. i'm sure david stern is happy to have a super team again.

Should we believe that their decision was just a coincidence?

I think you are right - and that the NBA is making a BIG mistake making this the opening game. They will get a large TV audience, but the NBA, by doing this, is setting the ground for some deep trouble from the Cleveland fans. I hope they just boo Lebron and there is no violence but geez, why have this the opening game?
The NBA is all about marketing and this matchup would be hard not to watch for even a casual fan. I don't like the way things have gone or the marketing of the big teams but this is to be expected.
They could have scheduled the game for Miami and not riled the Cleveland fans right at the beginning of the season. The TV viewership would still have been huge. And maybe Miami fills all of their seats....or maybe not. Does anyone in Miami care?

I agree. Scheduling Miami in Cleveland at the start of the season is incredibly stupid. It could lead to some ugliness which would reflect on the whole league.

Looks like the Official Schedule will be released August 10th. Maybe they are changing it after reading this UK thread?
They think Miami - Orlando may be the opening game. But everything is really rumor as of now.
Set to be released August 10th, this year's NBA schedule has many anxiously waiting. Personally, I can't remember the last time a schedule release has been this anticipated, but for good reason. Let's take a moment and think of some of the exciting match ups this season.

Opening night is a big night for every team, it marks the night each team embarks on their journey towards their goal—a championship. By no means does the first game determine how good your team is, or how the year will play out. But it can provide more than its fair share of excitement.

Already leaked on Sportingnews.com, apparently the state of Florida will start off the NBA season with a bang, as the Magic and Heat are set to match up on October 28th in the Magic's new arena. The game is to be broadcast on TNT.

Miami will be put to the test immediately. Can they stop Dwight Howard and the Magic? How will the Heat's chemistry look? This game is full of exciting questions and is sure to be entertaining.

I don't know about you, but if that leak is accurate and that's how the 2010 NBA season is truly going to begin, I can't wait to see what the rest of the schedule holds.

Really makes sense, since it will increase ratings. The Cleveland fans will take it out on Lebron no matter when in the season the game is scheduled.

They should consult with us before doing something as important as planning the season schedule.

I agree, this should not be the opening game. Having the Heat play the cavs in the opener is as bad a decision as "the Decision." I would schedule that game maybe after a few weeks and people have gotten settled into the season. That would be just too much hype to start the season. It would be like pouring gas on a lit fire. They need to let the Cavs fans get used to their new team and used to Lebron playing for another team before scheduling that game.

Heat @ Cavs, Celtics @ Lakers should have been the opening night games.

Well, I would not have put it on the same night as a NFL game, but I think delaying that game for a few weeks was the smart thing to do. It would have been too much tension if it was a opener and the last thing the NBA wants is another brawl between players and fans.

Anybody still have any doubts that he NBA is not a WWF like show. Cmon, are they going to have somebody attack Lebron with a fake chair at some point.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?
