Kurt Thomas STILL plays great defense. That guy is amazing. He could teach so much to our young bigs about leverage and anticipation. He moves his feet and gets up under his man so well. He does that hand to hand combat thing and then forces guys to take bad shots.

I always liked Etan Thomas. Having the two of them on the bench reminds me of the Davis boys from the Reggie Indy teams.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I understand the need for vets but if guys aren't gonna play they aren't signing for the minimum like a lame ass herb Williams back in the day.

The knicks have adequate experience already. Rip Hamilton would definitely be gangsta. Detroit is rebuilding. I can see them dumping rip.

I'm not complaining about that but I think we can use a couple of veteran role players for our bench. Guys who wont primarily be in the rotation but be classy, smart, helpful veterans for this team and give a good example to our young guys. No flashy name, just a respected vet.

Can you think of veterans we can sign for the minimum that fit that criteria?

Right now I have Kevin Ollie and Kurt Thomas off the top of my head. What about - gulp - Brian Scalabrine?

Give me some names because I can't think of any at the moment.

Kevin Ollie just signed a 5 year deal @ Uconn to become an assistant coach. He lives in Glastonbury

good for him. Great for that program. Hell of a good guy

I don't know, I just feel like have a grizzled vet or two around is good for the team. Especially good guys who are basically coaching young guys at that point in their careers.

Theo Ratliff, Chuck Atkins, Anthony Carter, Brain Skinner, Jamaal Magloire, Kevin Ollie, Etan Thomas, Anthony Johnson, etc. are other examples of this.

Ratliff would be someone- and we pay him extra bonyus $$ for keeping AR on an even keel.

I like Thomas, but only because he seems to have a political backbone- something rare in many professional athletes.

THis team don't need any Vets. They need coach, guy like Skiles.............. he had very little vets with those young bulls and Bucks. They need a guy like Nate McMillan(?) in Portland, he got those young players to just play every year. And even though you need to be a 45 win team to make the playoffs out west, he's built that 20somthing team up to that point.

Are coach has enough to win 40 games or a 8th seed, he better do it!!!!

I might agree without hesitation if I had not been a HS coach for so many years. Team leaders, even at the professional level are important-sometimes more important if you have some prima donnas on your team. Do not discount the value of a guy who can be a coach on the court or keep people in line in the locker room. Do you really think that Magic, Jordan, Bird, etc. did not play a role in managing the egos of certain players.

MDA might just be a coach who needs a strong leader- even if it means that this player leader is a guy who will go to a see him in private and try to talk to him about issues that may be keeping the team from performing to their abilities, both individually and collectively.

I think that is exactly what he needs. I think Duhon was that guy the first year he was in NY but there was no one in that spot last year. I think Harrington might have been the most vocal guy last year but I don't think D'Antoni liked him in that role. I am not a fan of D'Antoni but he is the coach and I think he needs someone like this in place on the team to be successful. I think Walsh pursued Kidd, Hill and Stackhouse last year to be in that role.
I am not sure how much he is able to play but Kenyon Martin is definitely a vet that might be a fit here. He is not a typical D'Antoni guy but Denver is a different team when he is not out there providing leadership and defensive intensity. I know he maybe done but if he is able to play he could be traded for Curry straight up and his contract also expires next year.

Raja Bell woulda been perfect as a veteran leader... i wouldn't mind a guy like Matt Barnes either, i like how he plays the game
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.
