I dont disagree with that, but if you remove Parker and Melo from the equation, who is obtainable this summer that can help us jump into the top 4-5 in the east as you waould like us to do? Randolph is a good piece but still needs to develop. Doesnt' sound like Monta is on the table, even if he was I doubt he's getting us to the next level. Felton? Miller? Ridenhour? RJefferson? The pickens are slim.

You wanna bring richard jefferson? hell no, over pay for a washed up scrub? I would take mike miller over RJ any day. Felton wont sign a 1 yr deal.

Even if we don't get Bron, I gotta say that I'm excited about the prospect of an Amare, Randolph Gallo frontcourt. If we get Ridenhour in here to run the pick and roll and keep defenses honest with the J -- I don't think playoff are out of the question. Melo probably won't come next year, but if we faciliate a trade for Tony Parker or another good perimeter player with Eddy's carcass, we're back in the game. At the very least, we're an exciting team again. If Yao Ming's recovery is slow, we can also look forward to a low lottery pick that can possibly be packaged. Things aren't as gloomy as they were a year ago.

No, I dont want to bring in RJ, thats not what I was implying. I was pointing out that the pickens were slim and we might have to wait it out unti next summer or at the very best the trade deadline before we have a chance to land another max-player, (Melo or possibly Parker).

who knows who's available or not? that's Donnie's job to be working the phones & aggressively pursue all those "options & flexibility" he was selling everyone on when he made the trades to get us to this point... if we fail on landing Lebron you telling me it would be acceptable for Donnie Walsh not to have an acceptable contingency plan in place? & by that i mean not overpaying for underwhelming talent, but landing a legitimate player that can help this team going forward & be an integral part of what we're trying to build... a player that along w/Amare will help to form the core for the foreseeable future... right now with Amare & Gallo we have 2 nice pieces... we need a third to be a contender this year, preferably someone who can orchestrate the offense effectively... i realize the pickings are slim, but i'm not the one who chose to go all in for the summer of 2010... this is the situation Donnie's led us to, so he needs to deliver.

he's done a great job. This is a very hard town to stick with a plan when your losing basketball games and he did that. We are 12 hours away from the Lebron stuff but most would have to agree we are or were in it to the end. He gave us a chance to add two max stars to the roster and has done everything he could do to make that happen. We have a good shot.

Plan B has some good names coming up like Anthony Randolph.

Even if Lebron doesnt pan I think we still end up with a good team with a good future

I think best plan b to salvage this summer would be working some deal with Minny & Lee and getting Rubio & filler.

At least that way, he can say he's added a potential star.

WALSH DESERVES LITTLE PROPS. If you think about every trade he made, they were all pretty much in the other teams favor. Not overly bad deals like what IT was doing, but clearly deals where it was either a wash or the other team came out slightly ahead. I will admit that he had a clear plan and stuck to it. But he gave up far more assets than he needed to. I would give his tenure a C+ at this point. What he does now will determine whether the grade moves up or down. Can he do a sign and trade with Lee that brings back solid assets without maxing out our cap space? Can he use our cap space to accumulate some draft picks? Can the 2nd round players actually play and contribute within the next 2 years? Can he resign Barron to a cap-friendly deal or will we have to continue to go without a center?

If Walsh gets Randolph and Turiaf for Lee I will be pleased with what he has been able to do this summer. I don't think you sacrifice cap space for long term commitments for the guys left over. If Walsh could make one other smart move, i.e. adding Mike Miller, I think the Knicks are in good shape for next year and the summer of Melo.

It was a no win situation for the guy, maybe some of us were a little hard on him. I was one of him. The amare move is genius if we grab Lebron, good if we don't.

A sign and trade that doesn't send us back Ellis and gives us AR and Turiaf is the best we can hope for. If AR turns into the player most think he could be we have one of the better front lines in the NBA. Turiaf if healthy is a tough guy that can play a little center.

Lebron chooses miami he is Prince Harry.

exactly... the point is, and why I think Walsh has been great is he's stuck to a plan for 2 years. He's put us in a spot where we have a good shot at having a championship caliber core after just being here two years. If we swing and miss on Lebron? With a deal for Randolph apparently on the table his backup plan is looking pretty solid right now, and that wont even eat up much cap space.

Obviously I want to see Lebron here, but if that doesnt happen I am pretty excited about what kind of team Walsh is going to build this offseason.

No Worries

Fishmike - in some ways the Anthony Randolph deal keeps the present and future bright

Knicks add another versatile and talented big man and the spare cash to wave in front of Carmelo or the next candidate at lead guard

Lebron does NOT get showered with love in The Garden unless he is wearing white trimmed in orange and blue

I can live with that

Props to Donnie and MDA. They made sacrifices in order to give the franchise a chance to at least get this far.

Think about it. Miami basically did the exact same thing that Walsh did, except they were even more drastic in stripping down their roster, and, most importantly, they had Wade, a bogus "FA," in their pocket, pushing them to create more and more cap space so that they could bring together their so called dream team.

Walsh did everything right in his attempt to get James, but he was not starting out with a player like Wade to serve as a lure.

He faced a true Catch-22 situation. Create cap space at the expense of presenting a decent team to prospective free agents, or have a decent team with no true stars with room for only 1 max contract, and face the probability that a guy like James would not want to sign into that situation.

Walsh did nothing different in concept when you compare the Knicks plan to what Miami did. Miami just found a way to dump even more contracts, open up even more cap space, so that they could stand by and have Wade lure Bosh to Miami, and then watch as Wade and Bosh reeled in LeBron, who stopped struggling after Bosh said he would join Wade in Miami.

Not sure what else Donnie could have done, and I doubt that having this or that player instead of someone we did draft, would have made a difference.

Lee has to decide to go to GS, and so picking up Anthony is not a given.

I will modify my prior response by saying if we can trade Lee for Randolph and Turiaf without picking up Ellis's overpriced contract, then I would move Walsh's grade up from a C+ to a B+. I think Randolph will be a very solid player in 2-3 years after he fills out and learns the game better.

The Godfather gets an A+ from me. He had a vision on how to fix the Knicks and put in a plan to clean up Layden and Isiah's mess. He stuck to his plan and right now he has given us a chance to be a great team. He is swinging for the fences and I love it. And if this just happens to be a long fly ball he is still managing and has back-up plan to get us to the summer of Melo and put some pieces in place.
