If we just kept Lee drafted Whiteside and Jordan --- used the rest of our cap to be opportunistic-- i really think we would do better. I would like to see wht Sacramento might want for White perhaps 3mm and next years 1--I will do it--they have too many bigs

Next year's one might get swapped with Houston's. THat might be too risky as a trade asset for Sac to consider.

what are they going to do? no choice at this point, except to sign guys. melo's about to be locked up to another contract, i don't see howard leaving the magic, paul still isn't going anywhere. gotta get guys at this point and hope it works out.

why lock into a scenario where on the surface, you have little chance of winning it all? if they miss on the elite 2, go for some young guys or make some trades for potential talent over locking up guys who will be the next marbs/randolphs/etc.

Then the problem is D'Antoni who isn't into developing guys. As long as D'Antoni is around, they're going to go for some vets.

Its not ideal, but what else do you want to do if other guys turn us down? I wouldnt mind sitting on the money and preserving cap health going forward, live through a few more years of sucking and get in the lotto, but we don't have our draft picks, so that would be kinda pointless. We win 30 games next year we don't even have our pick

This would be a decent start, and we'd still have room to improve. Still have some cap flexability going forward after these moves, have who I think is a potential all star in the fold in Gallo (you may disagree). It wouldn't just be Amare and JJ leading the team on their back.

this is what i would rather do if they main targets dont show. trade for some guys with potential or eat a bad contract to pick up some 1st round picks, etc... dont really see things working well going the route of adding big $$$ mid tier guys. has never worked well for the knicks. always a first for stuff, however i dont see it with the plan b -ZZZ guys.

We likely wouldn't have our picks though for the next 2 seasons because of the Jared Jeffries trade, so sucking wouldn't net us any benefits whatsoever. And why would you want to eat a bad contract in a potential trade for a lotto pick which may or may not be realistic anyway (we certainly wouldn't be able to nab a top 5 pick). That sort of defeats the purpose of having cap room, Id rather spend the money on a good player, than cap myself out with a bad contract just to get the 8th or 9th pick in a draft (which may or may not be realistic anyway).

cuz adding good (at long term, high $$$) == nothing in terms of titles, minus elite talent (unless we become the second team to win with zero elite players). id rather take a chance at eating an expiring contract to get some young cheaper guys then add maxed out good players who wont bring us a title

Who's going to trade us a young potential young elite difference maker just for eating a bad contract (a young potential top 10 type player which you are craving for)? If your whole thought process is unless the guy is a top 10 player, i have no interest, we probably won't be good until like 2018 at the earliest. 2013 we finally get our picks, figure suck for a few years in the lotto, add some talent, it comes together and best case we're good by the end of this decade. You can build through the draft or through free agency but Donnie made the former a non-option when he made the rockets trade

this team has tried the trade for a star, sign long term guys and it hasnt worked due to poor choices. going after mid tier talent feels like a poor choice to me. im thinking if the guy is a fa, and he isnt elite, im not maxing him (or close to max). i dont have the correct route to take...

2018, its been almost 40, y not make it 50 for the next title...

We have our pick, Houston just has the right to swap. That's not exactly the same as having no pick.

I would SO be on board with preserving a ton of cap space, winning 25 games the next few years, get in the lotto, hit on a couple picks, and then flex our cap room muscle when we have a nice young core in place, but the Rockets trade really cancels that out as an option to me. Its going to just be ridiculous to sit through another couple bad years where we won't even have our rightful pick to show for it, its happened enough already this decade

Plus, regardless of what either of us feel, im certain that the guy making the call here (Donnie Walsh) does not consider that an option whatsoever. His time is running out, he won't be here for a long rebuild, and he knows hes going to be blasted if we suck the next couple years and Houston gets our picks. He's going to act and do something this offseason

Lets be realistic here, unless we have a big offseason we're not going to be as good as Houston. We're not going to be able to be a garbage lotto team who wins 30 games and gets to keep our pick. Houston at the absolute worst is going to be a back-end of the lotto team. They were in playoff contention for most of the year this year in a ridiculously deep Western Conference without Yao.

argh, the non awesome scenarios kinda stink. i gotta hope 1 of the scenarios they envision is that the dont land the 2 main guys and they do sit out the off season except to add some decent priced guys or resign lee. thats not much of a prize considering all the moves they made and that they coulda dealt with lee before now. im hoping for lbj and ill take jj or maybe even agent nutbag if lbj wants him...

Not sure what some of you guys expect the Knicks to do if Lebron, Bosh and Wade turn us down. Joe Johnson and Amare are good alternatives especially if we can move Chandler/Curry for Parker. We can hold our money for next yr and wait for Melo to turn us down. Then hold it for another year for Dwight and Chris Paul to say thanks aswell. We can continue to play this game of waiting for the savior or we can try to build a winning team.

im against maxed out vets like jj. bring in vets at "reasonable" cost or years, that shouldnt be too bad. now, what is reasonable... that depends on the vet and maybe what needs are left to be filled. since all that depends on hitting a home run (or 2) or striking out... too much speculation... by me and the media.

I guess you could make a case that Johnson/Amare is better than Crawford/Randolph but when you look at all the Knicks have gone through and gave up that is a big let down. Also, Amare and D'Antoni didn't have the best relationship in Phoenix and I believe I read that Amare did not respect or listen to D'Antoni. I am not sure if that is accurate but I do make a point of reading anything I see about D'Antoni as I see him as the big mistake made by Walsh.

So essentially we could have just resigned lee at a reasonable price and hung onto zach and jamal and not given up our draft pick made the playoffs and had a ton of depth and cap space coming into next summer.

Now we are being sold on the suns without nash, marion and barbosa? How that makes us relevant I don't know. So we can be a 5 or 6 seed???

I can't say I'm suprised because this franchise is a joke and karma never dies. When the nets move to bk the are a better franchise. Period. The history of this team is not storied or special. They are not a top 10 team all time and this owner has somehow fopund away to make nyc irrelevant.

And walsh has done a very poor job. Ebanks the best defender in college basketball is on the board and he takes a kid from stanford. Defense is an issue you take the kid. We have no chance in the draft because walsh didn't do his hw and panic midseason and had to move a kid whose confidence was destroyed and whose value was at an all time low. Washington took a laughable deal and we had a better package and draft choices to go along with it.

And is Amare even better than lee? Perhaps, but david takes 9 last offseason, amare wants 17. And let's not forget the heat might take him from us. Sad day for one of the nbas worst teams this decade.

zero/jc had to go... dealing with lee (trade or resign) is a bad move if he walks or they have to pay way more then what they could have had him at earlier. the rebuilding of the suns in ny just several years older is kinda odd if the roster ends up that way.

This is a good alternative plan. No you don't compete for a championship right away but you're a deep playoff team with these 2 all-stars and you can figure it out for there. We jsut need to be good first. I'm not a fan of rebuilding even more at this point if you don't get lebron. Only the spurs have one a championship with their own first overall draft picks on their roster, robinson and duncan. In order words, it's a huge gamble to rebuild thru the draft. You must get good free agents if they are on the table. I would be happy with stoudemire and johnson because we still have flexibility with curry and chandler. Having those two stars with Gallo is a great start and figuring out how to use curry's contract is key. If Lebron and Bosh say no or take too long to make a decision, you get these two, it's the right move.

Well said. It really shows how epic the failure of Walsh/D'Antoni has been if this comes to fruition.

Joe Johnson for $96M is just awful. I would rather strike out. And I cannot see Amare Stoudemire playing for Mike D'Antoni again.

The JJ Amare duo only makes sense if you have the PG to run this machine locked up. JJ is best as the SG where he can create mismatches and spread the floor. Amare is Amare, a PF and not a C. I would test the waters on each of JJ or Amare to see if they would be willing to take less than a max deal, because JJ at $14M is better for this team than Bosh at $16.8M. Same goes for Amare. The risk of offending them is not there. This is even better if the Hawks or Suns are open to aa S&T. They could be our third star in that instance.

Why resign Lee and take yourself out of the Lebron chase? (Lebron aint coming by himself). And Yes, Amare is better than Lee.

Exactly.

And after that? It's Boozer and Okafor(trade) and things such as that. Let us just hope it's not Arenas or some trash like that as a panic move - like how Chicago had all that money nobody wanted and they threw the max at Jalen Rose just to sign... ANYBODY.

Joe Johnson, IMO, is this year's Jalen Rose.

Get the max late in the summer from a team nobody else would sign with. Proceed to be mediocre.

Hmmm. Im prepping myself for a David Lee and Joe Johnson summer. Hopefully we can pick up Mike Miller too.

I dont see Amare playing for D'Antoni again. For all we know Harris, Favors, and Filler could end up in Phoenix for Nash and Amare. At this point everything is still up in the air.
