you can't really look to build through the draft when you no longer own the rights to your next 2 1st round picks... this is why Donnie's trade for T-Mac put us in a horribly tenuous position... it's all or nothing this summer & if we strike out on the big names, we're almost forced to sign 2nd tier talent to overpaid contracts just to be make sure we're competitive next season.

The 2012 pick is Top 5 protected. The 2011 right to flip picks is Top 1 protected. No need to sound the alarm all is not lost. Take the finger off the damn panic button!

Yeah but that pick is ONLY a SWAP, not an outright transfer of the pick. That's a huge point of emphasis. One we have to have a worse pick than Houston for them to want the pick and 2 if it is REALLY bad and we end up with the top pick we don't lose it. The chances are that we will have a better record or at the least a very close record to that of Houston, so what will the real difference in picks be? Don't you think that somewhat mitigates the harm that this deal does?

Then the 2012 is top 5 protected so again it does allow for us to actually be horrible if that was the game plan after losing out on every top FA.

So we could still trade the #2 pick for #23.
We stunk this year and gave away the #9 pick.
Look if think it won't matter, say it won't matter.
But to say that we didn't possibly trade away 2 lottery picks is just distorting the truth.

Dude we did get something for this. It's not like it didn't help us to be in the mix for 2 of the top FA's in a couple of days. This isn't about the overall value and it's best possible outcome which could be Lebron/Bosh. This is only about the worst possible outcome where we end up with no one and decide to tank. Otherwise there was a value for us in that we could sign FA's to improve the team. So yeah there's the possibility that if just about everything goes wrong you could end up trading #2 for #23, but it wouldn't be #1 for #23 and that's an important distinction. Something is better than nothing. Again this is only relevant if we completely strike out and tank. Otherwise there's nothing of note to talk about as you said.
