centers are so rare and can change a game so much that any one of them worth a fart in the wind is going to get good money. Look at the deals that these guys have gotten in recent years:
Steven Hunter, Diop, Dampier, Nazr, Okur, Pzrbilla, Dalembert, Nene, Jerome James, Birdman, Gortat, Adonal Foyle, Jim Mclvaine (remember him?) we could do this all day (I forgot our beloved Jackie Butler). NBA centers are a rare breed and teams will always overpay. Some are decent player but paid like stars (Dampier, Dalembert, Okur) others are garbage guys or just potentials that were given multi-year deals like Diop, Hunter, Butler and soon Earl Barron.

Good for him. I hope he gets what he is looking for. He looked like he is working hard.

With all that said, it's kind of a mystery why a 7fter with legit offensive skills (who isn't a pure stiff!) has been playing in the D-league and overseas. I think 2 weeks of minutes has gone to his head - and he's clearly banking that it may very well go to NBA executive heads too!

So here are some questions to ponder:
* Is Earl Barron the second coming of Marc Jackson, the former GSW/Temple player who had a fantastic run one year then became a 5pt/3rbd/10mpg player for a few years before doing something meaningful a few years later?
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jacksma02.html
* at 28, can he become a better defensive player, or is this what he is?
* how does he compare to someone like Channing Frye?

LOL... heard the same arguments being made for Turd after Isiah locked him up to his contract. 7 footers dont grow on trees, legitimate 7 footers will get paid, blah blah blah. How about we see what the market dictates for Barron before committing longterm dollars on him? there's a thought. dude has produced for 5 games. this hasn't been a season long trend at the NBA level. his stats in the D Leagues were decent but nothing earth shattering. offer him a 1 year guarantee and be done with it. dude is just looking for some kind of guarantee.

Exactly. Charles Barkley said these guys make more in a 10-day NBA contract than they do all year in the D-League. He just wants a guarantee for next year. Signing a non-guranteed deal benefits Barron ZERO right now. It just makes it impossible to latch on to another team. Hell he might be able to hook up with Miami again.

cant fault Barron at all for trying to hustle and get the best deal for himself.

But I cant co-sign giving this cat 10 milly cause he did his thing during garbage time in the NBA season. Producing for a team that is lottery bound in April when everybody is either resting their stars, setting playoff rotations, or waiting to go fishing is a whole different animal than producing on opening day when everybody is focused and fired up.

Not the same. Unlike JJ1, Barron has been a hard-worker and professional throughout his career. He just could never catch. Not saying I would give him the full MLE or anything, but a 3yr/$8 million contract would seem to be fair for his production and the fact that he can play center.

You pay Barron the MINIMUM. Anything higher is outbidding ourselves.

Minimum for 3 yrs with the last year a player option. Take it or leave it.

Barron has to wait like anyone else (including DLee).

Can't blame the guy, he is 28yrs old. He is playing is smart though, he can wait and see if he gets better offers. If not he can always sign for a non guaranteed contract.

Couple guys nailed it....why sign a non guarantee? He's producing. There are tons of teams with space plus there are overseas opportunities too....why sign his rights over to the Knicks if they could take the money from him at any time? I'd love to keep him but Knicks gotta stay focused on the big fishies.

Id rather offer a guy like Barron 3 years 4.5mm

If you offer him a min contract and he honestly blows up over 80 games--as in 10points 8 rebounds off the bench--you will be looking at 4-5 years 4-5mm$

This way I am hedging that he will give me value and jump at the security of a 3 year deal and I stay away from the bigger commitment. Contracts for 1-3 mm for 1-3 years are fluid--easily dumped or added in to other deals if need be. Its the 5 year + deals that kill you on the wrong player.

Knicks fans have the fear that as soon as a player leaves he will blow up and be worth millions more. It is quite irrational.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.
