I would have thought Manu could get 3/30. I would have thought teams would have tried to get him for 3/24 (maybe we would have). But I didn't see any team going 3/40 for him. He's got a lot of miles and constant injury concerns.
Well, now we move on and I am glad to see some players doing their extensions NOW - rather than in the late summer.
WHY? If those players wait they cause teams like us to wait them out if we want them - and that causes us to lose out on some players early - and then maybe the player we waited out as well!
So if guys like LBJ, Wade, Bosh, JJ want to stay home? Then, please, PLEASE let them sign extensions before we would have a chance to sign them outright....so we can move on with the next plan in line!
There are some grumblings LBJ might be making his mind up early. Fine by me. Just do it now if you're staying home. Don't torture every team that has cap space!!! Only to turn around and STAY IN CLE!
NBA should make a new rule on this to prevent such problems: Extensions must be signed before the free agency period begins.
But, yeah, that'd be too easy, and take away from the Stern drama machine (supposedly which creates interest!). It doesn't though, it creates frustration and causes some teams to screw themselves in the process trying to wait out a player who had never intended to leave his present team.
Miami already stated they are signing whoever agrees first out of Bosh, Amare, and Lebron. They have that luxury because they already have Wade.
The current CBA doesn't allow players to sign an extension once they are a FA. They just sign a new contract. As I said in other threads some of these guys just want that 6th year. An extension would only allow them 5 years.
I guess I should have worded things differently. Something should be done regarding players who will remain with their current teams whether they are going to sign an extension or sign a brand new contract. It shouldn't be as such where teams see free agents, set themselves up to get them, wait a whole summer for particular players to make a choice....while potentially missing out on other pieces...only to watch that FA turn around and say he was never leaving anyway and to watch him stay home.
It's a flaw. Not an immoral one but it is a flaw. The league's business should be to help any team improve. In that something should change. What and how I really don't have an idea. The whole Restricted versus Unrestricted FA process is a cluster**** as is the bird rights and ability or non-ability to re-trade or re-trade for players within specific time frames, the QO and BYC. All this crap just destroys most team's chances to improve.
I hate watching it. I can't be alone.
EDIT: Anyone recall the NBA telling the Knicks and Bulls to either get the Crawford trade done or to move on? This to some degree is the same thing. Should be specific time periods to recruit players, extend players, re-sign players, trade for players. Honestly, after about 7 days what on earth can there possibly be to talk about?

Miami: They're in good shape if they want to be. Wade can get Bosh or Amare. Then they can fill in the blanks. Sure, they're in good shape.
While we may not have that SUPERstar we certainly have a star (David Lee) and a potential future star (Gallo), and the same ability to recruit a big name player and an additional sidekick.
So we're not exactly screwed either.
