The issue regarding Hill is not necessarily about how good he may, or may not, become, but how much of a chance he got in a Knicks uniform, and the fact that the coach of a team that was going nowhere chose not to give him consistent minutes.
As some have also pointed out, even if it was to our long-term benefit to give Hill up to clear up some cap space for next year, the fact that he did not get a chance to show much with us meant that Houston could demand, and get, a future # 1 and swap rights for next year's pick. Walsh could not argue that Hill was enough for Houston to take on Jeffrie's contract without draft considerations, based on what he had shown on the floor for us.
MDA's coaching decisions come under scrutiny in this scenerio- I doubt if Walsh would have stepped in if MDA was giving Hill 20MPG on a regular basis the entire time he was with us.
I'm on board with the general theme behind Walsh's decisions and our clearing cap space plan, but he would have had more leverage if Hill's value had been built up prior to our decision to trade him. Add to this the fact that many folks on UD dumped on Hill as a pick and as a player without really seeing what he was capable of doing, and you have the rational for a thread like this one.
