Thanks Paladin for getting things back in order with this OP

I think as a poster mentioned, Gallo guarding the opposing pg is going to tire him out. It takes a lot for a guy his size to guard an opposing pg. Now, for Jeffries to do that was ok, as he doesn't do much else, but we are cutting off our nose to spite our face if one of our best offensive players that is a SF ends up guarding pg's most of the game. (Maybe do it for a few minutes in the first half to see if Gallo can handle it and if the game is close, do the switch towards the end.) Then again, this might backfire and allow a post up on Douglas.

Andrew did say a good point regarding stopping P&R's, which D'Antoni says over and over again as being one of the most efficient ways to score. But still, I don't exactly get it as we don't have a presence in the middle and we now have a PG who can stay in front of opposing PG's so why the sudden experiment???

Anyway, we are 3-4 with Douglas starting and us using Gallo more lately. So, we have something to look forward to next year...

Despite Gallo being able to make it thru a near full season after his back surgery, I think it's a mistake to try and have him go bang inside on a consistent basis. I can't think of anything that has the same potential to cause a flairup in his back as guarding bigger stronger guys in the post. His footwork on the perimeter had really improved over the course of the year. It can't hurt him to get better at defending quicker players.

Now over the summer they can work on his core and base strength and then I can see taking the chance going up against other bigs, but right now it's not worth the risk.

When there's actually something to play for, I won't care. But right now he is being developed into a complete player. I'm sorry. Guarding a guy like Steve Nash now will make it that much easier to guard, say, Hedo Turkeyglue next season.

I endorse this strategy.

Fair point and a different perspective. He could end up being an extremely flexible defender at some point.

I can play devil's advocate, though, and say that he also needs to be able to something that he has not had to do too often this year- guard players down low- especially larger players...

...no?

I'd like for him to take some abuse down low too... especially if he's going to play the other team's "best." I will say that banging in the post won't mean as much as guarding against the dribble though. I was hoping that Galoo would become a 4 but it looks to me as though he's a 3.

Gallo is MDA's boy, if he wants to guard PG's he'll be allowed to guard PG's... why he's doing that when we have a great defensive PG already on the floor is a mystery to me, but it is what it is... i'm done trying to make sense of MDA's nonsensical decisions at this point.

And you see how effective it is...We held them to 132 points...

I think this is the right time of year to let Gallo learn how to play better defense. Its not like the loss to Phoenix is costing us a playoff berth. Next year, he probably won't be covering the PG, but it is good that he is learning how to do that in the event of a switch. The more Gallo learns, the better the Knicks can be.

TD needs to learn how to defend the bigger SGs anyway.

You know I gonna spin wit it

shouldn't be be learning how to guard the post & wing players instead of on the point?

With Coach D's preference toward switching off picks, he should know how to guard every position. These games are throw away games, why fuss about it?

i dunno, i guess i just like things to make sense sometimes... since they're all throw away games we mine as well try Gallo out running the point on offense too... maybe he can try his hand at playing the C position too.

I'm not sure how a big man guarding a point guard helps his defensive game, he should be practicing guarding big men...Bill Walker got caught on Lopez in lots of mismatches...Many lay ups as usual, no interior presence...Having a big man on the inside might help...Who cares anyway...No one cares...MDA is great...He is taking full advantage of his two year pass...

Checking the opposing best player is good for development, no matter how you look at it. The best place for Gallo to take advantage of his body would probably be as a weakside defender, protecting the basket, no? As for him defending centers, I don't think he should do that "cross my fingers".
