the jeffries deal ONLY makes sense if lebron's a lock and they're all in with another top fa too. at that point our draft picks will be up in the 20's and won't be that important. jhill won't matter either.
that really it. This is the first time post Ewing we have a chance at a star franchise player. Its better than the 2.8% chance we had at winning the lottery also.LBJ is a NY guy. If our chance is only 20% or 10% thats fine. Its worth two lousy years when we werent going anywhere with those players anyway. We can add guys like that anytime. Whoop de do. If we strike out fine. At least we had as good a chance as anyone.
If we whiff we can always fill the roster with CJ Watson and those Euro kids that Briggs lusts after
the problem is Dolan- if we miss Lebron, we're going to end up with next level guys - lets say a Joe Johnson & Dirk scenario.
And sure we'll be better, but we'll lack tools to get better, be capped out and eventually watch the players we sign turn into Allan Houston- albatross contracts that have future GM's trying to appease Dolan - not unlike Layden and Thomas- by adding that 'one more piece'.
If its not Lebron, we should keep our money or like Briggs suggested, try to find some lower budget, hidden gems.
But the last hidden gem Walsh found was Anthony Roberson!
Not sure thats fair. Walsh has a pretty good history in this league.
Dirk isnt going anywhere, but say we end up with Lee, Serigo, Joe Johnson and Tyrus Thomas thats a decent team. You hope to use Curry's contract get another piece. You have a couple 2nd rounders that maybe the Knicks can use to move up or buy a pick (Toney Douglas may yet turn out to be a solid player).
Then what..? We wont have cap space or high picks so we will be stuck winning our 42-45 games a year and getting bounced in the first round? Thats certainly possible, but the point is at least we took a shot at getting the best player of our generation (who is an openly NY guy). I think thats the point that is missing.
The young hungry upside guys Briggs touts are great when you already have a solid core. Detroit made a big mistake signing Charlie V and Ben Gordon. You can get those kinds of guys in salary dumps.
I would rather take salary BACK than sign mediocre guys.
Like sending the Jazz Chandler and our two 2nd rounders for Kirilenko and our first rounder back and the Jazz's later first rounder. That would save them over $18mm. We could try again the next year when its Melo and whoever else.
This FA class is one of the ages. Inside intel or not we are set up to have a shot. At we have that. The mistakes of this management have been so over dramatized its unreal.
