I'm disgusted by the idiocy of this trade and Im also a realist. LBJ is a bailout for the people who made this deal--but it was never going to happen anyway. If he is a man of his word--why would he come to NY--what exactly is going to provide a winner here anytime soon? I've wanted to build a strong balanced team over the last 8 years starting in the pivot--weve just refused do do it. Dolan wants LBJ as a bailout for his inept handling of his team.
I understand your point of view but I don't agree with it.
You also can't build the team YOU want you have to build a team the GM and Coach want. So that's two separate things there.
As to the trade it's not as big a deal as you want it to be if you take into consideration that we could be a pretty good team as a result of it.
Not to mention despite being backed into a corner in the 11th hour and having to give up an extra asset to get Jeffries off the cap the truth is we made the other 2011s go away without spending any assets at all. So if you look at the plan, which was to tear down the roster, and you look at the final cost of doing so (Hill who isn't very good, 2011 swap yet to be determined because houston isnt very good, 2012 pick yet to be determined because we will be pretty good by then) you should come to the conclusion that Walsh did a very good job.
Zach, Crawford, Jeffries, Hill - Bad players on long term contracts.
Liquidated entirely into 2010 expiring contracts.
Using Mardy Collins, Hill himself, 2011 pick swap (undetermined), 2012 pick (undetermined).
Hey, that's pretty damn good. That's very well done. If you told me that it would take Collins, Hill, a 2011 pick swap, and a 2012 pick to move out nearly 40M in guaranteed 2011 money and gave me a shot at the league's elite? I'd been dancing in the streets.
I even made posts a while ago saying "If it took Nate, Lee, Chandler, Gallo, etc to make cap space would you do it?" Some people felt they would. And we didn't use them. We used Jordan Hill (who stunk and whose 2011 was hurting us as well), a pick swap in 2011 (which wont be much if nothing at all because Houston stinks), and a 2012 pick (which might be irrelevant if we do well in the offseasons of 2010 and 2011).
Is that really that bad? I think it was a terrific job.
Now, what we build from the ashes is a SEPARATE ISSUE altogether. Can't hitch both wagons together.
Had to:
a) Tear down the mess, end the business practices that got us that mess. (done)
b) Start building a new team from scratch (pending)
c) Put the final touches on the new team and then compete (pending)
You judge each body of work by itself.
Part A is done. Part A was done very well.
Now let's see what Part B turns out to be before we get upset, shall we? Why speak down on something that has yet to occur?
