In any business, when you are forecasting any type of future revenues you tend to be very conservative to give yourself some wiggle room.

If you read any "behind the scenes" articles about GMs, you will see that GMs, like any type of business planners, also tend to be conservative when they are projecting the cap. This enables them to strategize with more certainty (e.g. "We will definitely have enough cap to offer one maximum contract") and gives them more flexibility than attempting to project the exact amount, which could screw you over if you are wrong.

Long story short, that $53 million is a conservative number and represents more of a worst-case scenario. The cap will be higher than that barring any dramatic changes/alterations.

"This is a very cautious situation that we're in. You have to be conservative in terms of using your assets and using them wisely. We're building for the future." - Zeke (I guess not protecting a first round pick is being conservative)

like the Lakers and Celtics team planes crashing into the Cle arena when the Cavs are playing the Magic. Something like that would hurt the revenue for the rest of the year. Any good GM would be prepared for ANY thing. Chance favors the prepared mind!

i've been saying this for the past few days, we still need to dump more salary if we expect to get the guys we want this summer... Lebron & Bosh aren't coming here to play with Gallo, Wilson & a skeleton crew of minimum salary players, that's just not going to happen... we need to free up more cap space so we can put a real team together... if u can get T-Mac to stay on a contract at around midlevel dollars, then it's a huge selling point, but that means u need to figure out a way to dump Curry in some kind of S&T deal over the summer... there's no way he's going to agree to any buyouts for anything less than a veteran's minimum difference, so buyouts only serve to save us on the luxury tax & don't do much for our cap situation.

more evidence.

Cap is going to be about $1mm less if at all

Chris Granger, the N.B.A.’s senior vice president for team marketing and business operations, said the league had anticipated an attendance decline of about 6 to 7 percent.

“The fact that we’re only down roughly 1.7 percent going into tonight’s games, I’m pleased about,” Granger said Friday. “Our teams have been very resilient thus far.”

For the trillionth time attendance does not equal revenue. Many teams are selling heavily discounted tickets. The tickets will include free food and other crap.

The cap is going down.
