The Marbury trade was fine. I still remember this board the day of the trade and the thread went like 30 pages in a few days...Cats were geeked around here.

It was the Eddy deal that sunk us.

Yeah, back then it was great. Marbury was on the brink of becoming a hall of fame player. I don't think Isiah knew what he was getting into when he got this guy. He still has to hold some responsibility for it though. It was his move. Eddie was also bad, but think of this...

We were on the cusp of having capspace by 2007. That was when Allan Houston's contract would expire. I believe LeBron and them were also free agents (Granted, they were restricted) that year. If we just kept ourselves on the path we were on. Let the fat trim itself off, and build ourselves on picks, we could possibly be a contender now.

The Marbury trade put an end to that. Curry, Randolph, Jerome and Jared only added to it.

I feel you, but Zeke was not brought in to tear it down and rebuild the squad with an eye towards the future. Its unrealistic to think that he could have done anything other than make power moves and build and immediate contender.

Great point.

The Curry trade was the killer. We gave away franschise player compensation for a guy that cannot even crack the rotation and is untradeable. That deal set us back 5 years.

Steph n H2O reminded me of how disappointing it was we never got King n Ewing. Injuries took away some really good duos we couldve had success with. Even if only for a while.

Just my thoughts:
Isiah had troubles but Dolan has been the constant issue since the last days of trashing Riley to the current issues. Dolan has been behind many of the most disabling moves to both this organization and the Rangers. Forcing Checketts to hire Nelson, get rid of Grunfeld or JVG and eventually pushing him out the door, his desire to get rid of Ewing, Spree and Camby which resulted in horrible trades because they didn't give him the respect he thought he deserved, giving Houston a ridiculous contract because he liked him and they are golf buddies, pushing for the Marbury trade which eventually got Layden fired because he couldn't pull it off, not allowing Checketts, Layden or Isiah to rebuild when everyone knew they should including them, pushing to get rid of Wilkens because he didn't have the right "personality", his desire to bring a big name like Brown to sell it to the public instead evaluating whether it was a fit then bumping him because he was not loyal to him or his GM, desire to bring in another high profile coach in D'Antoni, not letting Walsh buyout Marbury instead allowing the freak show atmosphere to continue to somehow punish Marbury, allowing the Anita trial to happen, letting Isiah run lose. His constant power struggles with his father and the Cablevision board have cause serious harm to both franchises (I won't even go into the book of Sather). With each loss of this new regime you can feel Dolan's influence beginning to grow. The fact that Walsh talks about answering to his boss in his decision making is scary. It's like picking at scabs when you still know that the infection is still there. I still find it hilarious that Herb Williams remains on the staff under FIVE different head coaches basically because the owner likes him as one of the game's biggest jokes. But nobody gets it but Dolan.

The problem is that the fanbase itself is becoming diminuative. Isiah definitely contributed to that.

My thoughts exactly.
If anything, attendance hit a low point during Isiah's LATER years when they were getting blown out
by 30 points in the 2nd quarter, and the only entertainment at the garden was chanting "FI-re Is-AI-ah!"

let's be real, NY was buzzing with excitement when that Marbury trade was made... yeah, it turns out it was a horrible trade but at the time it created a huge buzz & Knick fans were excited to go to the games.

I'm not disputing that. What I'm disputing is that the seats were empty after Isiah buried the Knicks in salary cap hell, not before. I was as hopeful as the next guy that Marbury would be the primary star here.

Isiah did good in getting the 1st round pick from TOR in the Antonio Davis for Jalen Rose swap, but messed it up when he took Balkman instead of Rondo, not like most people were touting Rondo that is, just saying... Marcus Williams was the popular choice with some around here, but he's turned out to be a scrub too.

The Marbury trade would have been fine if he didn't end up being a total crack pot, and if we weren't still on the hook for our unconditional #1 pick 6 years later.
But then you can't say the signs were not there that he was indeed a crack pot.

Actually they were. Main reason why Dolan axed Layden. The day that the Marbury was traded to the Knicks the Garden sold out for the rest of the year. Actually I think only in Isiah's last season did attendance drop a little in 06 and it wasn't by that much. One reason why Dolan was reluctant to get rid of Isiah was because he got people to still buy tickets much to the amazement of the critics and talk radio. I remember WFAN were going nuts about that issue. It was a point on topic on this board as well in a lot threads. I think attendance has only got back this year a little from the Isiah days.

You're right, tho. Drafting Rondo might have saved his job --- but Marbury would have had a fit.

Papabear Says

Please Please don't talk about my main man Zeke. He was a great He was a great coach he was a great GM He was the King the master the leader. He did so much for the Knicks..

Now if you believe that I will sell you stock bonds worth a hundred thousand dollars for only ten thousand dollars. I'll sell you life long Knicks home game tickets for only two hundred dollars per season.

IT needs to just say, "Hey, mistakes were made during my tenure in NY, and I got fired for them." He left us a salary cap mess, but he also left us some young talent in Lee, Chandler, and Nate. Lee was an absolutely brillant pick. If he would have taken Bynum and Rondo, he probably would still have a job.
