TMS wrote:actually Chinese accent can pronounce L's... it's Japanese accents that can't... but i wouldn't expect any non-Asians to get this. You probably know better than me but I'm pretty sure there's an 'L' sound in Chinese dialects. But I have to disagree with you TMS. Many Chinese fobs really don't pronounce "el". It comes out as either an 'R' sound or it's just skipped altogether. I think a lot of it has to do with where the 'L' is in the word. So they could pronounce "love" but not "peeler". |

Chinese people use the "L" pronunciation... go ask a Chinese guy what "Dee yoo lay lo mo" means & he'll tell you. actually it's the "R's" that Chinese people have trouble with... that's why they pronounce "Marbury" as "Ma Buh Li"... if u asked a Chinese fob to pronounce "peeler" he'll pronounce it "pee loh"... Koreans have the same problem... if u asked a Korean fob to say "Oh Really", it would sound like "O Lily" instead, not "O Riry" like you see in those joke pics on the web... many Chinese & Korean peeps have the last name "Lee" or "Li" or "Lim" or "Lai"... it's a natural pronunciation for them. Japanese peeps pronounce "R's" differently... the "r" sound isn't as rounded as it is in English & it's also not an "l" sound like Chinese & Koreans pronounce it because there is no "L" in the Japanese language... instead, they pronounce the "r" as a sharper, less pronounced "r" sound, almost like a soft "d" sound... the "R" doesn't get rolled in the Japanese pronunciation as it does in English. here's how they say "Thank you" in Japanese... notice the "r" sound in "arigatoo" is different than Americans might pronounce it http://japan-cc.com/sounds/thank.wav

I like how Marbury threads just evolve into educational dialogue on East Asian languages. The power of Starbury.

Hey TMS, thanks for breaking it down for us.
You know, racial profiling really sucks guys. Profiling racially is really dumb when you think about it. You really need a full-frontal view to see those bushy greek eyebrows, tiny asian eyes & huge arab noses. lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). I am asian and I was quite impressed at TMS's educational diatribe.
but..is Filipino really asian? Them fookers in the National Census can't make up their minds. When I first got here I was Oriental, then Asian, then Pacific Islander, then they actually had Filipino as a race, then a hybrid Asian/PacificIslander. Now...I don't farking know.
