But I'm not ready to say he's done a better job here than Van Gundy, who did some great work with Ewing in and out of the lineup over a 5 year stretch.

Only difference with JVG is that he was standing on work done by Riley. It's like the coach in PHX now who is basically using everything that MDA taught him and his team and adding to that base. In this case there was no system or base in place and MDA has had to figure out how to get these guys to play at their best from scratch and the players have had to do the same. Developing a chemistry and a style on D that can work for the guys we have. At least JVG had a group of seasoned defenders to work with.

i think JVG got the absolute most out of a tough situation... he coached a #8 seed all the way to an NBA Finals w/o the services of 1 of his best players... he had the same sorry team that imploded on Don Chaney playing a game over .500 before he decided he didn't wanna stick around with the sinking ship... right now, judging MDA from his body of work IN NEW YORK, i'd have to say he's done a good job getting guys more focused on playing team oriented style basketball, but in terms of wins & losses, it's been a mixed bag... this season started out worse than any other coach in recent history has had this team, u can't just dismiss the slow start but give the man props for the past month of recent good play... hopefully that was an aberration & not a sign of the up & down tendencies of yet another Knicks team... we've seen Knicks teams in recent past tease us this way before only to come back down to earth & struggle down the stretch... the 1 thing that gives me hope is the fact that both the GM & the head coach seem to be on the same page for once, instead of having differing agendas like during the Isiah years.

Yes he has done a good job. Fielded a more athletic team with length and quickness and I think he has made decent adjustments to suit the overall talent level on the roster --(I'll probably get burned at stake for saying this). Now there will be people who would rather knitpick a single action or event and over analyze it. But on the balance looking at the big picture I think he has done as well as I could have expected him to do. But this is still just a good start and he has a long way to go. So I would say he is on track to get an "A" but right now his grade is "incomplete".

D'antoni gets credit for adjusting his style from an offensive emphasis to a defensive one. But he has not been great on diagramming inbounds plays. His rotations have been great though. None of this, we have no difference between out starters and backups stuff. He gives guys he trusts defined roles and lets them be comfortable to get the most out of them.

In order for things to be as bad as 3-14 you need more than just a bad coaching job! The players were the top culprits in that record. MDA can't hit shots for multiple key guys missing horribly. Now I still think he didn't have a handle on how to set his rotation or what the pace should be, nor what the best defensive scheme should be. Still with a team like ours that wasn't expected to do ANYTHING, he has done a lot of good work to get the ship turned around.

This has the look of sustainability. I say that cuz we don't get a great performance from everyone every night, but the overall team play stays fairly consistent. With our defensive scheme being more set for the players we have, it looks like we have a solid identity for the 1st time in a long time.

fishmike wrote:Lots of threads early this year about how terrible MDA was in every way. 1-9 start and its deserved. Last year we won 10 more games with essentially a less talented version of the same team as the year before, but I think most would agree there was nothing really impressive about last year.

This is the first year in a very long time around here I have seen the coach have a clear and tangible effect on the level of play and the development of players.

I think Gallo is doing well. Al is Al... he's going to put up shots. Duhon was really horrible early on and is now quite serviceable. Hughes had a nice stretch and is back where he started. Kind of whatever of those guys.

However Lee, Chandler and JJ are playing at a level I think most around here could have only hoped for.

Lee's development is astounding. He's one of the more skilled big in the league. He handles the ball. He's got range. He cleans the glass. He gets assists. MDA has given him the biggest role on this team. He's the key guy here and he's delivered. 19ppg, 11rpg and 57% FGs.

Chandler's turnaround this season really speaks volumes about how he is coached. The effort is always there. But he's really changed his game and how he fits here. Shot selection and defense have been so improved.
Chandler in Oct-Nov 32 minutes, 11.9ppg, 5rpg, 40% FGs
Chandler in Dec-Jan 36 minutes, 17.2ppg, 6rpg, 51% FGs

And JJ...
we all would and could trade him for a fart in the wind to clear cap space for next year. But a guy thats been regarded as nothing but an albatross contract with YMCA skills plays a vital role on this team.
Jeffries team +/- numbers?
+3 on the court, -4.5 off the court +7.5 differential. He's played 50% of the minutes this season. Thats a tangible impact (he's got the highest team +/- on the Knicks).

For the first time since 33 was patrolling the paint I actually feel good about this management and this coaching staff. Feels kinda weird to be honest.

Some how even with D Lee elevating his game, he's still not consider a go to guy, which I think seperates him from being a good player and a all star. Funny thing is now when he takes that mid range shot your almost surprise when i doesn't drop.

not at all, but all of the other bad **** he brought to NY far far far far outweighs what he did or did not do with the draft picks.

Frye = fail. Marbury for future draft picks = fail. Curry for 2 first rounders = fail.

Isiah by all accounts is and will be one of the worst GMs EVER. Fired coaches, harassment suit, poor cap management, bad trades.

you also need a lot more than just a good coaching job for as good as 9-6... in the end it's always about the players performing up to their abilities, but it takes a good coach to get the most out of his players... the slow start doesn't reflect any less than the recent stretch of good play does on MDA... in the end u have to judge the entire body of work... right now we haven't done anything yet... i came into this season expecting our young guys to get maximum burn but so far that hasn't really happened... the team is playing better basketball of late & that's a good thing, but it's not a good thing to have veterans still questioning their roles & all the drama that still lingers... i'd say MDA has done a respectable job under the circumstances, but nothing that blows my mind, at least not yet... if he has this team playing the way they did in December for the rest of this season, then he deserves all the credit in the world for the drastic turnaround he would have achieved in such a short span of time... that's still left to be determined in my view.

Excellent post Fish....Two things MDA was questioned about when he arrived was his teams didn't play any D (some people on here were calling him Mike Antoni) and he was all about the SSOL philosophy. Well MDA has adjusted to the roster at hand by slowing the pace a bit and taking advantage of the length on the defensive end. He's done a heck of a job thus far.

The thing that impresses me about what D'Antoni has done this season is that he's changed his coaching strategy to suit the players. He's gone from his characteristic running game to a slower offense and much greater emphasis on defense.

didnt mention HOF... yes or no, is this team well coached?

Being that you were the most outspoken supporter of Isiah and Marbury this should be interesting.

3 of the 4 players you laud in your opening was brought here by Isiah...

Imagine if Isiah hadnt traded Ariza? Drafted Bynum? Does it matter? Isiah's tenure here represents one of the worst jobs in pro sports.

Anyway....

lets try again...

yes or no, is this team well coached?

In Isiah defense, he was asked to turn water into wine with the roster we had...I would have loved to see him given the task to rebuild given
his drafting skills...Water under the bridge bro...

As for MDA coaching, I'll wait until the end of the season to cast judgement...But glad he scrapped SSOL and caved into to playing some Defense...
I would like to see some more plays runned besides the pick and roll cause Duhon won't go 6-8 from the three and Lee won't hit 13-18 on most nights...

even if isiah had the assignment of rebuilding instead of improving the team immediately, would you still have trusted him to make personnel decisions? He might've drafted well, but like the author mentioned, he blew the andrew bynum pick (and I wonder if walsh will get the same pass from some of you who beat him up for the jennings pick. jennings and bynum both went 10th). Yet the way he valued players was so off base. Crawford for 9 million? Curry for 11 million? Jeffries for the full mid-level? Jerome James for the full midlevel? Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza for Steve Francis? An unprotected pick for Eddy Curry? An unprotected 2010 draft pick in the Marbury trade?

As for the post. I have to agree with it, good job by D'Antoni. Especially Jeffries. He's bringing out something in his game that Larry and Isiah didn't. David Lee has progressed to a new level as well. The Knicks have played over .500 for half the season now. That hasn't happened in a while. And with a below-average point guard and a weak back-court in general.

On the defensive end he has also utilized the zone to cover up some of the individual defensive weaknesses of our player.

He is showing that he can adapt, just like Riley did when he created the "hammer time" Knicks after having gained his reputation as coach of the showtime Lakers.

Holfresh, I am complaining about Isiahs drafting. I give him credit for some of his picks, but drafting Frye over Bynum and drafting Balkman at 20 knowing full well he wouldnt be taken later on is poor drafting. We could have had Rondo and Bynum. That along with his FA signings, piss poor trades, unprofessionalism, poor coaching, firing of constant coaches and constantly insulting the intelligence of us fans makes you worthy of having no more nba jobs.

I agree with everything fishmike said. MDAvpushed all of the right buttons including with Nate.

I think thats it... he was regarded as a system guy, and only as good as Steve Nash made him. Obviously thats the furthest thing from the truth. He's gone through a lot of gyrations and benchings and trial and error but he found 8 guys willing to play both ends and has put them in a postion to succeed and maximize what they do well. Isnt that all you can ask of a coach?

Cap'n Zeke gets a bum rap too often around here. Laydumb is the guy who ruined the franchise. Laydumb traded Ewing, and traded away first round picks for Marbury and Curry. What an idiot. And that sexual harassment thing? That was bad. Not to mention hiring, then firing Larry Clown. No, Zeke looks pretty good compared to Laydumb. He saved the franchise by signing all those great draft picks. Gallo may well turn out to be his best draft pick. I'm pretty sure Zeke still has a role with the organization behind the scenes because he has a propensity for brilliant moves. I'm sure he's the invisible hand guiding Walsh and D'Antoni. I can't see how else you can explain their recent success.
