First of all, I want to wish everyone a Happy Nate Year!

Now today's poll: In your opinion, was D'Antoni's benching of Nate Robinson a personal thing, or was it Basketball-Related?

Man you're all over the place. I never said anything about the benching of Nate being responsible for all of the teams recent success. My only point has been that MDA was right to bench Nate and that all he's been trying to do is change a losing team's losing mentality. I never made any kind of simplistic statement that you're accusing me of.

The simple fact remains that the team is playing better after MDA has made his adjustments. His defensive schemes are working, his offensive adjustments are making things easier for the team to stay in games. He's not finished with this project, but so far he's made some good improvements.

Can people revote if Nate begins to screw up and the team loses 20 in a row, or even a few tight games because Nate turns it over or takes ill-advised shots?

Basketball related but with a personal undertone. The personal undertone is Nate's attitude rubbing Mike the wrong way and Nate refusing the change that or even JUST keep it under wraps.

You notice in the ATL game he was calm and composed for some time but as the game went on and he started hitting shot after shot he starting posing to the crowd, looking at the opponents bench, glaring at opponents, and each team-oriented celebration became more and more animated.

When he lept into the team when he put the Knicks up in OT by five and the Hawks called a TO you could see Mike D was FURIOUS with the celebration running onto the court shoving players towards the bench - KNOWING AS A COACH that all ATL had to do was come down and nail a 3 and it's suddenly a game again!

So, well, that's the personal side...and it will once again erupt because Nate is Nate and that won't change.

Nate will be a FA at the end of this year be it with us or ANY OTHER of the 29 teams that might trade for him prior to the deadline. So Nate needs to drop the "trade veto BS" and just go to any other team, be Nate for 3 months, then he is free to sign with any team. It's not like the guy has 6 years on his contract and would be a prisoner of a team he dislikes. It's 3-4 months!

The case has been made over and over in multiple threads that MDA didn't have to prolong the benching and a two game suspension would have sufficed to get the point across. This argument flies in the face of reality because everyone here knows at some level that Nate has not gotten the point. He is immature and actually takes pride in his preening and mockery of the coach, opponents etc. And to sya Nate will be Nate doesn't somehow make it alright for him to behave this way.

So then it comes down to simple choice between whether Nates offensive skills outweigh his negative impact on the team. And while people may have their own opinions only one really counts and that would be MDAs. I suspect will be benched again and soon. And I for one will support it again. Some people never learn, and you give them an opportunity to show that they can and after that you cut them loose and move on.

Refusing trade to Memphis or anywhere else = DUMB MOVE IF TRUE
Allowing Nate and Lee to have vetoe prower on trades was also a DUMB move by Walsh

I'm saying Nate will be Nate not in an "It's okay" but in an "It will NEVER change". In that he needs to be dealt.

Also, Nate and Lee got trade veto power by the CBA given their contract status - not by Walsh.

I agree either player vetoing a trade is silly because they wouldn't be prisoners of that new team - they'd be a 3-4 month rental - play their hearts out and go get that new contract from whoever they wanted to. Yet maybe we're dealing with some serious mental midgets here. What clown wouldn't go to even the Nets for 3-4 months, play like an all-star, and then put themselves up for a mega contract after those 3-4 months? I mean, come'on.

Didn't know about the CBA thingy, thanks for pointing that out. I agree with your original post and wasn't aiming my comments at you, rather at people who think we should not have benched him more than two games because Nate will be Nate. I am not sure about our ability to deal him because he is a liability as well as an asset in many ways already discussed in deph here. Other teams are fully aware of this. Now GSW under Mad Nelie seems to be the likely destination or maybe Washington if they really blow up. Only other team that may be interested in Minny, Kahn has fetish for point guards, he can't get enough of them

Maybe an analogy would be where the smartest kid in a classroom is also the biggest distraction (high functioning autism or asperger's, etc.) The teacher wants the kid to succeed, as well as the rest of the class, but it's just so hard to find were the twain shall meet. So they go through all kinds of attempts at discipline (timeouts, principal's office, family intervention, etc) before ultimately determining that the kid and the rest of the 20-odd kids in the class are not a good fit together. Neither enhances learning for the other. No malice from anyone involved, it's just not fair to derail the learning experience for the whole of the classroom to accommodate the special needs of the "gifted" one.

nixluva wrote:Uh TMS, isn't the idea of sending a message to a losing team ultimately about winning? I mean wasn't the crux of the problem about not playing with discipline, which is a staple of winning BB? SO if the coach sits a guy cuz he's repeatedly playing without discipline and even his pre-game approach shows he's not serious enough and acting like a pro, isn't that about WINNING? If MDA wanted all of the guys to realize this and play with more focus and determination on DEFENSE, which Nate wasn't doing, isn't that about winning?

Man i'm so tired of your B.S.! You don't have a valid point and yet you continue to spout this nonsense that has no basis in fact. What the hell are you talking about anyway? Cuz if i'm gonna judge a guy surely someone with a resume like MDA is gonna get the benefit of the doubt over the players on this team who've never won anything. DO yourself a favor and sit this one out, cuz you're starting to embarrass yourself.

I agree Nixluva. It was probably more basketball-related than personal, as MDA was probably fend up with Nate's antics and wanted to send a message to the team that they needed to get more focused about turning the season around.

But I must say your second paragraph was in poor taste. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion on the forum. Disagree without being disagreeable.

And that is really I think MDA's problem with Nate (besides the lack of defense). This is professional basketball, not the And-1 circuit. This is not about showing up guys or pounding your chest after every basket or acting like a fool for the crowd, it is about playing disciplined basketball and winning a game. Until the game is won, there is nothing to celebrate. But Nate always allows himself to get distracted with showboating. That is just who he is, but MDA does not like it at all.

I like the analogy but my only concern is who the next gifted one will be. Hopefully Walsh will not acquire players based solely on their giftedness.

I can't go with this analogy because you are saying that the only way to be the smartest kid is to have a disorder. I was always the smartest and I've no disorders.

For what it is worth Gallo, Chandler, Jeffries, and Harrington seemed to be composed as they came to the sideline after the shot you refer to-it was the bench got caught up in the excitement and behaved like kids. Lee, Duhon, Hill, and Douglas also have to be looked at if you are being critical of this "incident" during the game.

There was 1:33 left in the game, more than enough time for an Atlanta rally, and guys coming from the court should have been concentrating on sitting down on the bench and listening to MDA's strategy about how they were going to play D on the upcoming Atlanta possession.

Perhaps this is just the overexcitement of a team not that used to winning, and a bunch of guys who really like Nate.

I would like to publicly apologize to TMS for saying that he shouldn't voice his opinion on this topic and also for my other strongly worded statements. I disagree with his position but that doesn't justify the extent to which I took my comments to him.

My take is that MDA went a long time with Nate and gave more than a season to get his act together. With the horrid start this year there was no more rope to extend to Nate or anyone else. MDA had to take drastic action to right the ship and he was successful. We can question the length of time, but in the end it's a Coach's call.

From my view nothing in his entire career suggests anything but a desire to win is what motivates MDA. People knock him for not winning a title but we all know sometimes you've gotta be a bit lucky too. My personal view is he's getting a lot out of a flawed roster right now. Nate's back in the mix now so all the drama should be let go.

You clearly have no grounds to say this

But I'm thinking you're smart enough to do that as a goof. Good one!

as soon as Nate got benched i stressed the point that Nate would never learn any lesson from it... so why do u somehow think 14 games as opposed to a 2 game benching made any sort of difference? Nate even said himself he had no idea why he was benched to begin with but would stay ready til MDA calls his # again... during the time he was riding pine, reporters asked him if he would do anything different if he ever got the chance to play again & he replied by telling them he'd go on doing what he's been doing & that was trying to help his teammates win ballgames... this is what u got with Nate Robinson, he is not apologizing to anyone for how he is, you either love him or you hate him, those were his own words... telling the press he was humbled by the whole experience? did he look humble the other night when he was flexing & staring down the Hawks' bench, screaming at the crowd & attracting attention to himself? please.

there were people defending his behavior last year when i brought up the concerns about Nate's behavior saying it was no big deal, & now they're on the direct opposite side of the fence on the issue... i dunno how anyone couldn't have known this would eventually come to a head the way it did personally... u could see it coming a mile away... Nate is Nate, he's not gonna change... u either live with it & take the bad with the good, or you figure out a way to trade him & get back an asset that you CAN live with.
