Point guards are important but there have been some good teams that did not have very good point gaurds:
Shaq and Lakers before this year.
Jordan and the Bulls.
Duncan and Robinson First time around.
Oh and that team that never won but was competitive:
Ewing and the Knicks.
And no one is expecting Chaney to make this team as good as any of the above.
All those team you mentioned had one thing a superstar or superstars. Topped with good coaching. With the Bulls they had MJ and Pippen who handled the basketball like guards, Lakers have Kobe who can play PG if need be same with MJ and Pippen. Ewing team had Derek Harper who was probably the best PG the Knicks have had. The other Ewing team had Ward and Childs, who were younger and had pretty good defense. The Knicks don't have any superstar Ewing was the last superstar. Duncan and Robinson superstars. You can get away with a decent PG but without a superstar to go to the PG of NYK calibur won't get it done. Thats why the Spurs the first time they won could get away with Avery Johnson at the PG spot with Duncan and Robinson it didn't have to be great.
