hey i said this back in may, 2008, man. it makes perfect sense that gallo would run a point-forward type thing. he has the crazy passing skills, the crazy shooting skills, and the crazy b-ball iq.

Not happening. Once Chris Paul and Tony Parker blow by our 6'9" pg a few times, we will be going back to Duhon and Nate.

and once paul and parker blow by nate and duhon, who do we go to then?

The point (no pun) is to have a larger, forward-type player to run the point...what they do on defense is irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure Chandler can guard the bigger point guards in the East. The trouble would be bringing up the ball against Rondo, Harris, Rose etc.

Haven't really seen Sun, so who knows if he can do that.

Chandler has trouble guarding some small forwards.

Sun is an absolute bum of a player who will be cut mid october.

Come'on...

Not to be argumentative, but MDA thinks he's got talent and said he's better than people think, so why should we doubt that? MDA tends to say things like that only if he feels strongly about it. This is no guarantee that Sun will be successful, but he's not necessarily a bum! How is a 2nd round Rookie who is trying to develop his game necessarily a bum just cuz he hasn't reached his full potential? We don't know if he might not develop into an effective role player or not, but MDA and Walsh seem to think there's a shot.

Like others have said Sun may have struggled to find a role, but perhaps on this team he can find that role much like MDA knew how he wanted to use a player with Boris Diaw's skills. I'm pulling for him, cuz I would like to see this team play big. I've always liked the idea of a big guard or point forward making passing easier and creating different matchups.

Guys, Gallo is not playing pg and Sun is never leaving the bench. Chandler does not have the dribbling skills to play point. Duhon, Nate, and Hughes are the only guys that are going to be running the pg position this year (with an occasional Douglas sighting). If by PG you mean Gallo might be standing at the top of the key and running the offense for a few plays, then yeah that might and probably will happen. But Gallo is not going to be bringing the ball up the court. Why put that much pressure on essentially a rookie? This guy's greatest skill is shooting. So let Duhon and Nate run the point and let Gallo focus on scoring.

Much more realistic scenario.

MDA, and folks on UK, are just doing a lot of imagining at this point in the season.

I don't know if MDA is serious about Sun's abilities when he compliments him, or whether he is just stroking his ego. Maybe he will be a sleeper, who knows.

That's not what MikeD said in the quote though. He said, in reference to Gallo playing PG, that he could see putting 5 guys on the floor that were 6'8" +

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

My man, are you reading the posts carefully?

Did anyone, other than the original thread title, say that Gallo was going to pay straight up PG?

Also, I may have missed this, but did someone also say Chandler is gonna play point? I don't seem to recall that at all.

The discussion about Chandler at point guard was that IF they run Gallo or even Lee at some kind of Point-Forward (which btw, is what Lee just said in an interview with Knickerblogger yesterday) was that because of his better defensive and athletic ability that he would DEFEND the opposing team's point guard.

And sorry, but this isn't fiction, but what MDA has said, he might try. Here's what Lee said yesterday:
Mike Kurylo: It seems that you have a much more diverse offensive game these days, but you still have that label of being a blue collar guy. Do you think that [label] is a bit unfair at this point in your career?

David Lee: No it’s not unfair, but I think in this system it’s defined that I’m going to work a lot out of the pick & roll and be asked to finish inside and hit 15 foot jumpshots. Also last year I was at the top of the key a lot making plays for other guys. And that’s something you’re going to see a lot more this year – is me handling the ball more and making more plays. That’s something that I enjoy doing and I think that I can help us and be a lot more diverse on offense this year.

Lee is likely not going to go out and say that if he and Mike D have not already discussed this, no?

and this implies that there may not be a need for a straight up PG all of the time, hence why MDA may have said you might see a big man lineup of guys 6'8"+.

I just watched that game against Atlanta again, in which Gallo had his 17 point outing.
And guess what, one thing he did in that game for a stretch (while Hughes was playing PG for us) was guarding Bibby. And he did it very well, ball denial and bothering his shot with his long reach, staying in front of Bibby most of the time... good footwork and all!
Also Mike D said it many times last year, that one thing he didnt expect and was most impressed with last year with Gallo was his perimeter D.
I think he will play some point-forward against certain match ups.

jefferies was pretty good at guarding the opposing teams' point guard last year - including chris paul.

good point, crzy.

only thing is whether jeffries actually makes the rotation this year. difficult to say, although i know walsh will want the flexibility to deal him too, which you have to guess will be harder if he doesn't play.

i actually believe that d'antoni likes jefferies. i bet jefferies plays more minutes than curry.

possibly.

it's hard to say. problem with jeffries, as we all know, is it's like playing 4-5 on offense, which with d'antoni's system is a problem, which it sounds like we are not going to abandon like last year.

d'antoni needs guys to be able to hit the open shot. with our team we can't get away with jeffries especially with no superstar out there.

of course, curry kills you on defense, as has lee, and nate, but that's already a given on this team, so the focus might be more on trying to be a real run and gun team like the suns were. we also now have gallo, duhon, hughes and milicic who have at least some defense.

he liked jeffries in camp last year, but then after we dealt for wilcox he soon lost his minutes to him until wilcox pretty much failed.

i think it was more that d'antoni was forced to play jeffries because we had no defensive presence down low, and he had some versatility.

how many guys is he gonna play this year?

he has a rep for short rotations, but we probably have 12 guys that could play.

someone has to sit.

i just can't see them benching curry if he can show that he can play in camp.

basically, there are 3-4 spots in the rotation that are major question marks, and it sounds like whoever does the best in camp will win their places in the rotation.

i have a hard time see him playing more than 9 guys, although he could run 10, with the 10th guy being mostly if someone gets into foul trouble.

There were other quotes from D'Antoni that give that article a more realistic spin.
Some of the question marks for next season include Danilo Gallinari’s health, Eddy Curry’s return, Darko Milicic’s potential, and how much the team’s two rookies can contribute this season. “If two or three of those question marks come through, I think we’re right there,” D’Antoni said.

Just curious, but does Curry have stiff legs? Cuz he seems to pull muscles in them quite often...
