I am about 98% sure that Lebron is staying.

more than interested in hearing where you came up with the statistical formula for this statement...

Moonangie and I have been talking about it all through this thread. Perhaps the chances are more like 80/20 than 98/2 but I still think it is unlikely: (a) historically, superstars don't leave their team when the team is willing to pay them max money and the team has bent over backwards to support them; (b) it is very likely our team will suck this year and LeBron is not going to come here unless he feels he can compete for a championship within 2 years; (c) LeBron is from Ohio and I am sure has some sense of loyality to the state; (d) Cleveland can pay Lebron more guaranteed money than anyone else (and in this global economy, Lebron is going to make endorsement money whether he stay in Cleveland or not; while there will be more opportunities in NY, the dude already is mad rich); and (e) just like last time, it is very likely LeBron's decision not to sign longterm has more to do with keeping pressure on the Cavs management rather than an actual desire to leave.

Basically, a lot of factors need to go our way. Our team needs to play better than expected and likely will need to make the playoffs to convince Lebron that there are sufficient pieces here to compete, which is a tough task. Cleveland needs to have a disappointing season to place some doubt in Lebron's head as to whether he can get over the hump in Cleveland. Corporate sponsors need to step up and show Lebron that he will make a ton more money in NY. We need to clear more cap space to maybe add another max or near-max player.

thegame -your arguement would have been almost exactly the same for Shaq in 1996.

a) historically superstars don't leave their team
b) it was obvious the lakers stank in 95-96 and would stink for a while, even with shaq while the magic were coming off a finals run in 95 and had horace grant and penny hardaway and more.
c) shaq was from the southeast, LSU, closer to florida than LA - he was an east coast guy certainly.
d) orlando could pay shaq more (and there is no income tax in florida), while granted there were more opportunities in LA...

ding, ding, ding. that bold part was all shaq cared about. is lebron like shaq? i guess we'll see.

I think LeBron is leaving Cleveland, but that doesn't mean he's coming here.

You have to remember two things with Shaq. First, Shaq wanted to do movies and that was not happening in Orlando. That was big factor. While Lebron has been in several commercials, I have not seen anything suggesting he wants to "go hollywood." Second, the Lakers offered Shaq more money than Orlando's original offer and Orlando and Shaq had some tough negotiations (this was before the salary cap). After the Lakers made their offer, Orlando raised its offer to beat the Lakers, but at that point, the damage was done. So Shaq's situation was different than what Lebron will face. LeBron is getting a max offer and no other team can offer him more money.

Its worth noting that LeBron has already signed up to play for a smaller contract than he could have if he had signed an extension this summer, playing for Cleveland or anyone else. Just to explore his options in 2010.

This doesn't mean he is definitely going to leave, of course. But LBJ's willingness to take what could be up to a 20% hit shows that the money isn't the top priority. And if he does stay in Cleveland he will have taken that hit for nothing.

LBJ will go where he thinks he can be part of a championship dynasty. Which leaves New York pretty low on the list, at the moment.

Its like a groupie website, or bitter ex-wives club. -Sebstar

Bro, Shaq wnated to play for one of the big mkt and storied franchises in sports history which is LA.

Also, looking at the history playing for the lakers, you had the greatest centers to ever wear the purple and gold: George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Karreem Abdul and they won championships. Shaq wanted to fall in that list..

Shaq was the biggest most dominate free agent name in 1996 and the lakers grab him. NExt yr, LEbron will be the biggest and dominate free agent avaiable and this is the other big mkt team's chance to grab him ( NY KNICKS).

LA already has kobe so it's NY turn to get a superstar via free agency..

I know that last year the Knicks sucked, but I am favor of saying the Knicks have better dynasty potential starting in 2010 than CLE if - and it's a big if - CLE doesn't do something VERY smart with big Z, they will be virtually capped out and unable to add new pieces (outside of MLE) unless they can move current players, which is unlikely.

If you have seen any of his commercials (all of which he wrote and produced, AND starred in - every part) then you already know that Lebron has a thousand times more acting talent than Shaq. In fact, he has more acting/writing/producing talent than anyone I can think of from the NBA.

He just "gets it" and his entourage of business boys seem to get it, too. They are gonna own Madison Avenue at a time that our economy starts going gangbusters again. And they will do it concurrently to the Yankees next dynasty years.

It's a dream scenario, but it's starting to shape up that way. Now if only the Giants could be more consistent.

He just "gets it"

I hate when people use that phrase as a way to praise athletes. It's almost as empty as saying "He's nice" "She's cool."

I suppose that's true. What I meant is that Lebron understands how to be a pitchman, he is a talented actor and producer, he maintains tight creative control over ALL of his commercial engagements and marketing opportunities, and he is really funny.

I can agree with you to an extent, but you have to remember this. He's allowed to have control of all of this just because he's LeBron.

However, if I needed help working on my acting skills or movie/commercial/tv show making skills and if I needed business advice and if I needed some marketing ideas, I wouldn't exactly be going to LeBron.

Although that one commercial where they make fun of the Heineken commercial was funny, it was just a spinoff of that and not LeBrons creativity. That was probably the funniest one.

Other than that, I take LeBron seriously with one thing and one thing only, and that's his basketball prowess. Same as MJ, same as Kobe.
