I saw the film. Did not think it was THAT amazing. Am I missing something? Care to break it down for me?

i agree that it wasn't *that* amazing but it was well done...

it portrayed aliens like jews during the holocaust and humanized them. it made relationships between them and human believeable and it wasn't scifi in a geeky way.

You know what's weird I thought of the Palestinians or the Japanese-Americans because the Holocaust was just straight extermination (though there was so-called work camps). One of my friends whose South African was telling me about the large number of refugees that they get from various war-torn countries in Africa so maybe the Director had them in mind. Btw Johannesburg is suppose to be really bad in some parts makes the America's worse inner-city look like Mayberry.

I thought the setup was supposed to mirror actual apartheid conditions - the shanty town was real, and not built for the movie.

Yeah - I do not think that the movie ever stated this was a drone class of aliens - although except chris, they definitely felt like untouchables. Furthermore, no where do I recall that due to their status or otherwise that the aliens were not able to use their weapons. The aliens actually demonstrated use of the mech suit for the nigerians before they sold it - for cat food.

It seemed like chris was going to come back - but he didn't seem too concerned leaving his prawn bretheren down there. Also, notice how chris and his co-collaborator were really the only prawns to wear clothing, while the rest went around naked?

To obm - yeah, chris probably was a trojan horse / something along those lines. He was the one probably piloting the initial ship. Remember in the begining of the movie they show something falling from the ship? That was chris's plane - and without it, the plane seemed not to be able to move. The limiting factor most likely was the fuel for the ship, which coincidentally also turned wikus into a prawn.

The end of the movie seemed quite anti-climatic seeing wikus living as a prawn. It was weird that as soon as chris found out that mnu was experimenting on prawns that the time required to "fix" wikus changed from a few weeks to three years.

Also interesting is that several scenes shown in the trailers for the movie were not in the final film.

At this point, does wikus even want to go back to being human again?

Over/under on a sequel?

I mean when it was a world-class city not a crime infested hell hole.

Over under on sequal? Sequal for sure, I feel like the story is just heating up, I can't wait to see what happens. Really classic movie here.

Caseloads, try to warn people ahead of time if you're going to have spoilers in your post. It's not fair to other people.

Saw it today. Incredible. Loved it! Story, acting and F/X were top notch. A combination of so many cool movies -- Alien Nation, Aliens, V, Robocop....and yet unbelievably original on it's own. Every once in awhile, a sci-fi flick comes out that just blows your doors off - this is definitely one of those. It was awesome. Nyk - run, don't walk bro!!!

Goin to see it tonight after work. Can't wait...

one thing I didn't get...how does the fuel cannister that sprayed in the guys face made him into a prawn come on!!!!. Other than that is was not bad. The guns remind me of the game "DOOM" like weapons.

It's the special fuel, that's why. Their weapons wouldn't fire for humans, either.

Yeah, the weapons were very doom-esque

I was thinking the same - how does fuel turn him into a prawn?

All will be answered in District 10, unless they choose to answer some questions in District 11

Saw District 9 tonight. What a ****in movie man!

My theory...

In the very last scene, they showed a side view of Chris Johnson and it looked like he had a huge yellow eye just like Wikus did in the last scene they showed him as human. Then they showed Wikus as a full blown alien. In the beginning of the movie they spoke about the ancient pictures and ancient language and showing lunar modules and stuff. My guess is that the aliens were the original inhabitants of Earth or had been from Earth previously and were coming back after leaving waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when. Why? I guess we'll find out in District 10.

These prawns weren't just different, they are destructive and violent by nature and they were causing a lot of damage to human society in Johburg.

This is more a commentary on how stupid liberals are because they would rather 'root' for the prawn and have everyone suffer in the name of some idealistic crap instead of standing up for humanity and things that are good.

There were people that actually cheered for the prawns in the theater. Pathetic.

These are the same people that probably care more about stray animals than they do humans in real life. Sad sad sad.

Very briefly in the beginning when they were showing all the clips of the people talking about the aliens, there was one guy who mentioned that stuff.

You know what I don't get - why didn't the humans go looking for that smaller craft when it fell off the mothership years before? They obviously saw it fall off - they had it on camera. Instead, they chose to build the District 9 camp right over the spot. Weird right?

And speaking of the mothership - once we got all the aliens out, don't you think numerous human scientists and the like would have been crawling all over the thing? I mean we were the ones who actually approached the ship, made an opening, found the sick/malnourished aliens and transported them to the ground. Then what? For 20-something years it hangs there and we never bother to remain on board to study every inch of that ship? I guess it was assumed we did. But then when Chris and his son get back on board, reactivate the ship and begin to pull away, where are the humans? Say there were thousands or at least hundreds of humans on board at any given time, they would allow Chris to just do what he did there with no resistance? Again weird. Good flick though!

the first part of your post really bothered me too... but I just brushed it off as footage found later. That footage was shown when the movie was acting as a documentary. Maybe people dug deep for that footage when they were trying to explain WTF happened

Considering your, uh, rich conservative values, you should have learned what an allegory is Sunday morning. But I'm sure the point went straight over your head then as it is now
