I was talking to my mom and dad about Ewing somewhat recently and I mentioned Patrick taped his Gallo to leg to avoid it flopping against his shorts and distracting everyone... I think it was the first time in a decade my mom cared about the Knicks

i ask this b/c karl malone and stockton were never booed in utah. utah then reloaded relatively quickly yet both were lauded for their achievements despite the team having success soon after their retirement.

but ewing was almost run out of town at the end there. if the knicks kept winning, would people look back that fondly about him?

imho, i don't think they would b/c ny fans don't appreciate anything. that applies to all ny sports, not just the knicks.
I think you over rate the negative. A lot of NY fans don't feel that way. It's just that the negative ones are loud and repeat themselves.
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

New York fans tend to not really appreciate their own while they are still active and playing for their team.

Ewing was the ultimate example of this.

He was a bona fide superstar, and we all knew he was an all-time great while he was playing for us, yet he was not shown the real love till after he left and then retired.

Maybe all fans are like this. But New Yorkers seem to specialize in it. We dwell on the things players don't do, rather than what they do.

ARod is sort of in this category. Nothing he'll ever do will be good enough. Then when it's all over for him, NYers will show him some appreciation.

I don't think Ewing is revered any more because we've sucked since he left. In fact, you can argue the opposite: Let's say we went on to great things after he left, and actually won a title. Then the fans who blame Ewing for the team not winning a championship during his career might be more forgiving toward him.
