Guys. Hill has enough talent that if he works his azz off, he can be a solid player. He has a decent jumpshot for a rookie PF, he has good hops and can move laterally. He is willing to fight for rebounds and can make a tough shot. He needs about 20 pounds of muscle, about 300-400 shots a day for the rest of the summer, and some serious work with a good big man coach. I predict by next summer Hill will be dominating SL competition no doubt. I think at worst, he is a slightly better Chris Wilcox. At best, he could be a Rasheed Wallace-like player (hopefully without the craziness). It all depends on how much work he puts in. No one can predict what this kid is going to be 2-3 years from now, so stop going crazy about SL.

The Knicks knew he was a bit raw, but still had him as one of the top 2 bigs in this draft. He has only 5 years of organized ball under his belt and it shows at times. His hook shot is a sight for sore eyes, and his jumper looked nice in the final SL game, but you can see that his instincts, especially on D, need the kind of help that only play against better competition than he got in college can give him.

Will he work his "azz" off and be able to learn? That is the big question. He needs work with the weights and with his technique, and he needs to make up for a late start in the game with extra time on the court. You do one and not the other, and you still have holes in your game. David Lee has done a fine job in terms of improving his game, but has never realized the importance of building up his body, and you can make a case that his lack of strength has hurt his defensive game, and this is what has kept his value down as a UFA. It does not matter what your personal philosophy is about it, the league has reached a point where it is necessary to have some upper body strength, especially if you are a 4 or 5.

I don't get the feeling that Hill is the type of guy to be a year round workout warrior. No evidence, just a feeling. Hopefully the SL is a wake-up call for him as a player. It will also be interesting to see if Herb Williams can make this kid into a better player, since I assume that he is our "big man" coach.

Time will tell.

1.) 3 coaches at Arizona and yet he still went from a "who is that scrub" to a star in three years. Now he's going to get coaching. Why would his development stop?

2.) Back to the basket in college, but played a lot on the perimeter in the SL. Obviously they are working to develop a different part of his game. This will take time

3.) He admitted to being out of shape when summer league started. Good sign that his numbers got better as the SL went along.

4.) I don't like how he got beat down court on the break several times. For rookies this is not a horrendous thing, it happens. But for a rookie on the Knicks it could be a horrible thing because no one is going to teach him

5.) It was understood that he was a project that has work to do. So with that in mind, were his numbers concerning? Why?

6.) To me, Jordan was not great in the summer league, but as Earl says, who cares. It's freaking summer league. Last year, guys wanted to have sex with Bayless aftger summer league, but how did his rookie year turn out? Summer league is just a chance for free agents to prove themselves, for rookies to get a chance to get used to NBA speed before camp, and for 2nd year players to see how their summer work is progressing. None of it really means anything except that the players need more work

7.) I think Jordan will be "nothing but a hustle player" to start his career, but he showed me enough during summer league to think that in time he will develop offensive skills. Why people are jumping off a bridge is beyond me.

Bip. Couldn't agree with you more.

I also think that Hill will work out for the rest of the summer and be much more in shape and ready to play come Sept. This was a wake-up call for him. He wasn't ready for SL but he is a competitor and won't take being outplayed.

Everyone wants him to immediately build up bulk; muscle people around, etc. That isn't his game, yet. He is more agile, can run the court (if in shape), and has a good jumper. I'd rather have him lift light to med weights with more reps. Build up stamina and lean muscles and let his body fill out naturally. It will. What he needs is more basketball knowledge and development. He walked numerous times when he put the ball on the floor. Chalk it up to rookie nervousness; trying to over-achieve; and also his need to improve his ability to handle the ball. If he works on this with a coach; and also works on his inside footwork and spin moves; watches tapes of NBA defense as well as the MDA offensive sets; then he will come into camp a very different player than we saw. He will be prepared and ready to play.

I wasn't very impressed with him. His defense is awful, lost his man almost every trip down the floor. He is raw, but shouldn't be that raw. I don't really see big things out of the guy. Maybe the talent level is a lot higher on other teams, but Javaal was really handing it to him.

Why? Either you are raw or you are not.

Aren't you raw when you haven't had a lot of playing time and/or coaching? Which is exactly the case?

Being able to find your man has nothing to do with being raw. If you play college ball you should be able to see your man and not give up easy dunks and baskets.

And I don't see him really exploding offensively or with great skills around the hoop. Obviously you can learn, but being skeptical is allowed especially with this team.

I fully agree with his defense being awful. With coaching he should improve. That is why I suggested he needs to watch a lot of tapes and practice.

Actually our entire front court needs work on defense. Who is good defensively in the 4 and 5 position?? Curry? Lee? Darko? Jeffries -good D but no scoring or rebounding. And even the guys who are gone from last year like Zach? Wilcox? Jerome James? Everyone was knocked for poor defense.

The point is - some #4 and 5 position players are good offensively around the basket; some have outside shots; some are good rebounders; some can run the floor; and only a few inside big men are good defensively. When someone is really good at all of this, then they are all-stars/superstars.

Hill is young and is good at 3 things so far - shooting, rebounding, and running the floor (when in shape). That is not a bad start. He needs to develop and we need to provide some coaching so he does.

Demetris Nichols looked like a finished product as a scorer during his first summer league and hasn't even sniffed the league yet.

Hill's defense does need alot of work. I think part of it is stregth, as he was pushed around alot during the games. At this point, I have serious doubts he is going to turn into a defensive stallworth. However, I think he can develop into a better defender than Lee. He at least shows the ability to block a few shots.

I agree. We should be happy - at least he didn't injure his back in his first Summer League game. That means he's durable. Otherwise, I think he'll fit right in on this Knicks squad.

I do agree with you here. He was beat down court on a regular basis. Worth jumping off a bridge??? No. But yeah, his defense was bad.

The Answer Man Knows It's Never Over 'Til It's Over

The Game- "Hill's defense does need alot of work. I think part of it is stregth, as he was pushed around alot during the games. At this point, I have serious doubts he is going to turn into a defensive stallworth...."

AM - I agree wholeheartedly. Your Yogi Berra-like comparison to Dave Stallworth is dead on target. Not Target the retail chain, but the target of filling a specific need at forward. Although he was a Pine Brother/ Minute Man, Dave Stallworth was a reliable scorer and tenacious rebounder. His minutes were limited as the Knicks frontcourt back in the day was no joke and minutes were scarce.

At 6'7 Stallworth, also known as "Dave the Rave", was also a defensive stalwart.

At the very best, Hill's ceiling is probably "average starting PF" or a tad better. The Knicks did not need a backup PF or even an average starting PF. They already have one that is slighlty above average in Lee. About the only way this pick makes any sense is if Hill can somehow give Lee his mid range game (which is not good, but it's better than Lee's). Since that's impossible, IMO we wasted the 8th pick.

ItalianStallion - don't assume David Lee is wearing a Knicks jersey this season and don't count your roosters before they hatch.

The Knicks frontcourt is under construction, with center as the most critical need to fill because everyone, especially rookies, needs a good running buddy.

Now I'm a Gallo fan so I'm going to play devils advocate here..

I'm sure since your name is ItalianStallion and you joined 2/2009 that you're probably a Gallo fan and I'm sure you don't feel that Gallo was a waste as the 6th pick and all, yet Jordan Hill was a waste of a draft pick and that he'll be average?

Other than Douglas, did you see any guards look for Hill regularly? Most of Hill's points were on quick flashes to the hoop where he was wide open, or on offensive putbacks. Other times i saw Hill literally calling for the ball so he could display his outside jumper. Once again, Hill making his own offense.

If he played with a couple more guys who understood the team concept of feeding the post, you would've seen more scoring out of Hill. What Hill really needs to work on is his man defense. Yes he is energetic on defense, but that is not the same as being a good man defender.

He's young and skinny. I hope he grows and learns to put his body on people. He seems to lay back on defense and rely on his ability to anticipate and react for the quick deflection. He needs to become more aggressive and develop a defensive mentality where he bodies up against players and muscles them to another spot on the floor.

Right now, he's a bit of a string bean.

excellent post. really describes what his needs appear to be on defense. that 'll also put him in a position to immediately turn and box his man out for defensive boards.

Yes, but by all appearances, his back is pretty strong. He should be physically able to play in some games this season.

This is an improvement over last season.

Panic Room

(the names have been omitted to protect the innocent)

Jordan Hill is a little better than Ronnie Turiaf. He is very raw offensively and has no feel for the game which will kill him once the season starts

I hated the pick from day one and he hasnt shown me a gawddamn thing to change my mind. Does anybody have any confidence in this cat? I mean, he cant even compete in the summer league for flucks sake.

He really looks lost and unsure of himself.

He cant finish inside and he cant shoot he will get 8 points 6 boards.

he won't be able to body up players like turiaf as he looks to have the strength of dakota fanning.

Let the record show I think Hill will suck.

I've also gone on record with the same sentiments. Dude does look seriously lost.

But..I'm trying this new positivity thing out. Hopefully with some coaching the kid develops in the league like he developed in college.

Once he gets over his whole "holy crap I'm a millionaire and I'm in Vegas" thing, hopefully he gets into shape. The whole being out of shape thing is deeply disturbing since he is a professional athlete.

I hope NYC doesn't eat him alive. I think many of us on UK can only imagine what WE would have done with fame, millions, and youth in this fine city of ours (have you SEEN the girls walking around during the summer??!).

I hope someone on the Knicks teaches this kid how to be a professional in this league. I doubt it'll be Harrington. Or Chris "Night Owl" Duhon. It certainly won't be Curry.

Damn this kind of makes me realize we don't have a single veteran who is a good enough player to be respected. In retrospect I think Grant Hill would have been a great guy to have to show Chandler, Hill, and the other kids how to conduct themselves...

Ok..trying to remain positive.

Um.

God have mercy on Jordan Hill.
Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
