JohnWallace - you think Gallo might have had a difficult time getting back on defense because his back would not allow him to get back?

Perhaps if you could back that up we can get back to talking about how many minutes Eddy Curry can contribute when he gets back, except of course, on back-to-backs.

If I can back what up? If you notice what they did with him; they had him take his shots from the top third of the arc after a couple of games of him not getting back.

do you really think that MDA instructed Gallo to only shoot from the outside because he wasn't fast enough getting back on D?

No other possibility? Like perhaps he was really good at the 3-point shot? Spacing?

Martin, don't be ridiculous.

Gallinari and Wilson Chandler provide the Knicks two impressionable, unselfish, versatile, inside/out, 6'10/6'8 players with the ability to advance the ball against token pressure from the backcourt. There has not been this combination of unusual size on the Knicks for since Anthony Mason and X Man.

Without a doubt we all dug Anthony Mason's routine but his posse was a bit too much for the security guards at The Garden. The Knicks got their hands on Terry Cummings too late in career, otherwise that would have been a blast to watch a sweet outside shooting big man spread the floor.

The fun part is that Gallinari drawing attention from inside will only make The Mayor less hesitant about dunking in someone's grill with his expressionless professionalism. The only thing Darko needs to compliment this shift line is a dependable 10-15 foot Jack Sikma step back bank shot.

David Lee is sixth man.

I can see it now.

I flat out agree with Earl.
If one single player on this roster is going to make a big difference between being another 33 win team mess or a potential 40 win almost-playoff team it will be whether or not Gallo is healthy.

Everything else is a status quo. Whether or not those players returning suffer injuries or not is a moot point.

It is all about whether or not Gallo can be a healthy player - the one we saw go off in that 17pt performance - or not. If he is then expect him to be an impact nightly. Expect a change in the overall team for the better. If not then just expect the customary 30-35 wins.

No one else fits the criteria. These players are who they are and will continue to produce on generally the same level we saw last season. Even if Lee or Nate or Chandler as slightly better - or Al is slightly more team oriented - or Duhon slightly more dependable - or Jeffries slightly less stinky - it won't REALLY change the final result over the course of a season.

Douglas could be a pleasant surprise that could work his way into the rotation but he won't be an exceptional season changer. It's unlikely Hill is or will be especially given the forwards that already hold all the minutes - and rightfully should hold those minutes - over Hill.

...I will submit one more, though, Earl: DARKO.

If by chance he is re-born, and I don't mean #2 overall pick re-born, I mean re-born to give us what he gave the Magic in his good season? Then that combined with Gallo could potentially put us into, dare I say it, the playoff picture (albeit 8th seed sneaker here you know).

Good idea, though, Earl. I'm with ya on Gallo being a huge X-Factor in our season.

Gallo is the X factor! No one else IMO can get much better than what they R. Maybe Chan can get more consistent, but a healthy Gallo for an entire season can tip the scales in a few more games. Gallo has that Turk or Dirk lite thing going for him. Great size and scoring ability from anywhere on the floor. Too quick for bigs and too big for smalls.

Lee will play 35 minutes a game and why in the world would they give him 7 million to be a backup? You're saying Wilson will average 19 points and 10 rebounds this year that will be quite a jump. I say Wilson stay the same because Gallo will get a lot of his shots

King1 - please do not make the assumption that simply because Lee has signed (for however much cash) that his role is pre-defined. Minutes are not guaranteed to Anyone, especially any player whose role in a suddenly crowded frontcourt, will be defined by matchup advantages. Please do not cite stats as this theory has more to do with TEAM playing personality than anything else.

Let's take a cold, hard Coors look at the facts:

Lee averaged 16.7 pts per game. If Danilo shoots 44 per cent from three point range as he did last season, count me in on the spicy moves to the rack. Offensive advantage - World B Gallo

Lee is a fan favorite. Danilo will make the girls swoon and scream even louder if he stays healthy.

Lee averaged 12 rebounds per game. Encourage Darko and Jordan Hill to throw the baseball outlet pass and start the break. Message from the coaching staff: Everybody rebounds.

Alternate distraction: if either Eddy Curry or Jeffries can play 15 dependable minutes per night at center, the pressure on Darko is relieved as his minutes can be monitored until he finds his New York state of mind.

Let us not make the mistake of each and every writer who gets paid to cover the Knicks on a daily basis, by pre judging and simply overlaying last years inconsistent playing personality on this years Marbury-free zone.

I have a feeling Mike D'Antoni will approach training camp performances with an trained eye toward cohesiveness.

The combinations (and rotations) will be derived from assist totals, effective defensive assignments, comraderie, enthusiasm and most of all, trust.

Best five start.

there’s a lot of offensive talent on this team. i think the success will depend on one person - mike d'antoni.

he needs to 1) instill a defensive game plan and mandate with the team and 2) a better offensive discipline with better ball movement and getting the man with the best shot the ball

Marv - if, as you so accurately point out, the return to classic Knicks dee-fense is the order of the day guess what happens if defense is a priority?

Jordan Hill gets to check Eddy Curry and Darko in practice, just for kicks and giggles... and to test his strength and tenacity inside against a 317 or 275 pound opponent. If he can hang without getting pushed around like a middle schooler, it will be a positive sign of better things to come. If he cannot hold his position, he better develop a jumper.

Who will be the best defender for the Knicks at the volatile off guard position, where most NBA teams are loaded with scoring threats? Will 6'7 Larry Hughes pay attention to switches? I like Sun at 6'9, if for no other reason that to get a hand in a dudes face. Nate's minutes just got sliced.

Either David Lee must defend the post or the perimeter with some impact. Frankly, I don't care which one. If he gives up 24, it does not matter if he averages 17.

One more thing...

Who is checking Paul Pierce?

earl, I’ve never seen Hughes listed at more than 6-5. and 185. I think he had a brief overrated period as a defensive player largely due to his playing the passing lanes and picking up a lot of steals.

I think toney douglas has real potential as a ball hawk.

Hill seems to have a lot of potential as an active off the ball shot challenger. In order to take full advantage of his athleticism he’s going to need to bring a “get the f out of my paint “ mindset.

Everyone else on the team is going to need to up their focus on the defensive end and d’antoni is going to need to establish that and reinforce that.

Marv - I'm all for establishing a defensive mindset but don't go for the okey doke... size matters. You KNOW it doesn't help the cause if the Knicks put a 5'7 shrimp on an opponents two guard.... no matter how lightning quick Nate is with the ball in his hands, it is horrible defensive matchup for a team searching for an interior presence.

I agree, Larry Hughes just looks taller because he has a tiny head. Audition Al Harrington at the two. Anyone. Just make certain they can make an opponent think twice, instead of laughing at, and/or looking forward to a mismatch.

Go big or go home

6'8 Harrington
6'8 Mayor

The team defense should improve with a more
determined effort and real size at C this year. Again we won't have to be a top tier defensive team just decent and it will make a huge diff. We won't be forced to play small unless it's to our advantage.

We also need some leaders on the practice floor and during game time who set the tone defensively and push/get in the face of the slackers when they are not doing their jobs on D. MDA has to back the leaders who emerge by sitting down the guys who are not holding their own on the defensive end of the court. I continue to believe that good D is about 25% head and 75% heart, and if guys don't take it personally when they are scored, no defensive scheme that MDA can devise is going to make a difference.

Gallo will eventually emerge as a team leader and go to guy, but at this stage in his career, I doubt if he will be accepted by many of our veterans as a leader they will defer to. For me, the most interesting aspect of the season besides seeing Gallo, Chandler, Hill and Douglas, evolve or emerge as NBA players, is to see which players on this team emerge as effective floor leaders.

Palladin - it is one thing to assume that Gallinari will emerge as a team leader and go-to guy.

Quite another to state the reasons why.

Team leaders fit a particular a standard criteria that other players respect, This criteria could be selected from any item on this list. Please check off the appropriate box for Gallo, or anyone else on the Knicks:

1. Ring Cred - players respect winners. Show me a guy with NBA Championship Bling and I'll show you a guy who can command rapt attention in the locker room after practice.

2. Enforcer Cred - Larry Bird was known for many things but he was respected most as a Celtics Traffic Cop. The guy who can get in any players grill about something that bothers him, no matter how petty, and the other guy does not dare talk back. Also See Charles Oakley

3. Stat Cred - highly over-rated. Leading scorers are not leaders, except in the number of post game interviews. See Ring Cred instead.

4. Grizzled Vet Cred (1000 game minimum) - any guy in the league for more than 12 years gets props for surviving the grind for more than almost 1000 regular season games (984 to be exact, nit counting a few playoff games for good measure) See Mailk Rose, who could not play a lick, but who enough time equity to be honored.

5. Hall Monitor Cred - the guy who the coach speaks through when the coach needs a mouthpiece for those moments he is not in the room. This arrangement is normally mutually beneficial as PT can be leveraged for accuracy of message delivery. See Larry johnson.

6. Player Coach Cred - worn well by Bill Russell and KC Jones. Player Coach Cred is also obsolete.

Lee was a bad defebder but centers didnt kill us scoring all the time. Look at what the perimeter guys did to us last year. We had teams with three 20 point on the permieter. Wehave daniels getting thirty and Mike James getting 20 and jarrett jack going off. Our whole team defense is bad just not the frontcourt.

King1 - you pointed out the obvious flaw. Cool.

What Knicks players do you feel are best suited, Skill set wise, to address the problem on defense?

King1 I think you may be overlooking the point of having a credible shotblocker. MDA's defense wants to limit teams to taking long contested jumpers. Thus teams will shoot a lot against us but when they do look to penetrate or post up you want better frontcourt D cuz those shots in the paint R high %. MDA also doesn't want teams at the line cuz that's even worse with most teams shooting in the 70+% range. He wants our teams to shoot a high % and the other team low by virtue of the type of shots we give them. Those fools gold deep shots will also lead to more fastbreaks for us. That's why even tho we weren't efficient we still scored a lot.

So to recap, we want to take away midrange and post scoring and tempt teams to get into a jumpshooting contest with us, but we sneak in more high % fastbreaks and pick and roll which allows us to score at a higher %.

"Standing on the perimeter, Gallinari beat Larry Hughes off the dribble and fed David Lee inside for a layup attempt. (Lee missed.) When Al Harrington missed a 3-pointer, Gallinari soared in for a putback dunk. And in the highlight of the night, Gallinari spun past Ron Howard and flew in for a two-handed dunk. He missed a 3-pointer, but shooting is one skill the Knicks know Gallinari has in abundance."

“I’m excited,” D’Antoni said. “I’ll try to tone it down. But you see that he knows how to play.”

Isnt it a combination of both you need for a good balanced D, good perimeter D AND an inside presence?!?
I mean if you have an inside presence, that is able to step in the way of a guy cutting or driving to the basket its way easier for the perimeter defenders to be more aggressive in the first place. On the other side, if you dont have a good inside defender, your guards will have to rotate and come to double, leaving their guys open on the perimeter.
Its got to get better on both aspects in order to work.
