N8 had problems following instructions in English, how is he going to do over there?

I still think Walsh ought to offer him a 3 year $12MM contract. Its less than this deal on a per year basis, but more security, and a lot less unknowns (different country, team, system, living environment, etc) that he should take it.

And does anyone think we can't trade him with that deal?

You could trade him but he wouldn't be a huge trade asset by any means. You'd probably get an expiring contract and maybe a late 1st round pick. Or you could make things easier and just purchase a late 1st rd pick for cash instead. I think you re-sign a player to a multi-year contract with the intention of trading him only if he's gonna be a very big trade asset. I'd give Nate a 1 yr, $6 mil contract. That way he doesn't affect our salary cap and we have a year to try to trade him but it's no big deal if we don't trade him.

That must be a tempting offer for Nate. With Douglas on the club, Nate must know his playing time will be reduced on the Knicks. He could be a star in Greece.

while Walsh was asleep...
As Walsh tries to fortify his backcourt, he continues to keep an eye on Nate Robinson, the restricted free agent. He was surprised to hear of news reports that the Greek team Olympiakos, which signed the Atlanta Hawks’ Josh Childress, might make a run at Robinson.

“I didn’t see it,” Walsh said. “I don’t read the Greek papers. Nobody has told me that.”

lol
How many GMs do you think do read the Greek papers? What would you expect Walsh to do here? We'd probably have to pay him about $8 mil annually to equal what he's getting tax-free in Greece.

it was a joke bonnie. I see you missed the humor in somebody we all joke about being asleep when deals go down making that comment.

Could be the best thing that could happen for the Knicks. He signs for 2 years, matures as a player, maybe learns how to play better fundamentally, and then in 2011, he comes back to the NBA where the Knicks would still have his rights in restricted free agency... they could match any offer for lil Nate.

Anybody know if bird rights are also preserved if a player plays overseas for a year or two... I would think not, but I am not sure.

10mm tax free--Nate soulvaki's are pretty good --I wouldnt turn that money down. Thats roughly the equivilant of a three year full MLE net. I mean unless Nate does not want to leave the US it's a no brainer--what is two half years anyway??? Thats a lot of $$

I don't believe that you can make money tax free. You either have to pay taxes in Greece or in the US. Uncle Sam doesn't let people get away with not paying taxes. This is a myth.

As far as I understand it he'd get paid tax free, except regarding social security. He's not a Greek citizen so no taxes. He's nto on American soil so no taxes there. The second that money is brought to American soil it is taxed though. So as long as he has it in a foreign bank account and he tapes stack to his inner thigh on his flight home he won't pay taxes

hmmm... his FG% gets better every year despite taking MORE 3's, he's a better player every year. Last year he's a big reason we won games because of his 4th qtr play. How about we just let him continue to grow here?

at some point his growth is stunted...........

We talking nate. He is a bench player good for 15 min a game to spark the offense.

He is a 5-7 SG. The little man can play, but if he does not equate for chemistry or fundamental reasons in a coaches scheme then its time to go. Nate is Nate: special!

We all joke about Donnie for being asleep? I'd be willing to bet you're in a small minority here actually if that's your view of Donnie.

This would be a coup for the Knicks. They could have Nate in 2011 while going over the cap to re-sign him and not have it work against their FA plans in 2010. To me, its a no-brainer. I mean, it isn't up to the Knicks, but in 2011, when you have fully used the $5M that it would have cost to re-sign Nate against the 2010 cap, you can then re-sign him.

You are deferring your rights to Nate, not giving them up. It is the best case scenario for the Knicks... far better than him taking the QO, far better than him signing for $5M a year. AND maybe they teach him how to play team ball over there. It would be great for him and us.

AND, he could develop a following in Europe, which could benefit the Knicks when and if he comes back state-side.

Or maybe they just want him to play in a puddle of grease. Seems pretty mean.
