I think we're gonna see some weird, finance related decisions throughout all sports over the next little while.

Am I mistaken or did Renaldo not just get inked to a gigantic 9 figure contract - but - the right to sign him also bore a 9 figure purchase fee payable to his old team?

Is that correct?

As to sports I think PhilinLA might have a point - if you look at this upcoming years' team salary list....you'll notice a drastic reduction in the top team salaries.

Of course, once we add Douglas, Hill, and either retain or S&T Lee and Nate - we'll probably be near or right back on top, yet, it's interesting.

Just a note, Hoopshype isn't always that accurate. Just a guide.

Transfers in football dont work like they do in the US. Teams first have to negotiate with the team a sum for the right to buy the player outright. In Ronaldos case, that was $131m. Once they agree a fee they then negotiate a contract with the player. In Ronaldos case, its a 6 year deal thought to be about £260,000 per week. That adds up to around £13m per year = $18m per year x 6 = $108m. He also still owns half his image rights (any commercial deals he does) and will be getting a cut of shirt sales.

But thats just the half of it. Real also bought Kaka for $92m and Raul Albiol for $21m. They are still bidding for David Villa for $60m, Karim Benzema for $40m, Xabi Alonso for $35m and Franck Ribery for $85m. So, outside of future speculation, thats an outlay in transfer fees alone of $244m in 3 weeks, with up to another $220m perhaps to come. Somewhere, an agent is very, very happy.

This kind of thing circulates in soccer. So, United now have about $150m to spend. Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will have to spend huge to keep up. AC Milan also have about $100m to spend after selling Kaka. And Manchester City just got bought by one of the richest men in the world and are looking to spend about $100m by themselves.

The cash swilling around has actually reached obscense levels.

my question is:

if the bucks thought it made better sense to release a potential restricted free agent rather than try and work out a sign and trade with cleveland or detroit - why do we think we're going to be able to work a sign and trade for dlee or nate?

i don't think we're going to get many assets in these types of deals. if they're even on the table.

Possibly the Bucks made a bad decision.

Milwaukee didn't want ANY contracts coming back because they want to resign Sessions and still have capspace.

I think Milwaukee had ZERO intention of matching an offers for him so they let him go. Maybe Skiles hated him.

If he takes the MLE from Cleveland they'd be a dangerous because Villanueva is big enough to play center and agile enough to play PF.

or they flat out didn't want to take back salary. I have no idea who is actually on their team (buyouts, etc) but they seem to be right at $62M without signing Sessions or Jennings.

That is the case. The GM said they wanted to resign Sessions and still have flexibility.

isn't that the situation we are in? not wanting to take back salary for these guys? what's our best bet? first round pick in 2010?
