i'm with marv. how do we know oakley is gonna be a good coach?

mark jackson is a "tough guy" who talks a lot of cliche ridden nonsense that most would not respond to i think.

i love oak, but simply because he was a intimidator on the court doesn't mean that translates into teaching this to anyone.

I has to be better than what they currently have teaching the league worst interior defense.

Why is Lee unable to play interior defense? The guy has the height and athletic ability to play it. Curry and Lee are in the same boat as far as effort on the defensive end.

He plays no contact D. Teams aren't afraid to take him inside b/c they never have to pay for it.

He has zero reaction time. Players just go around him. He has cement shoes when facing up an opponent. He also does not like to body players up and they've all figured out already to just face him up and drive around him while he stands there watching them go.

He is not a defender because he has no defensive awareness, no defensive smarts, no defensive skills, no defensive reaction. Nothing, nada, he's a ghost out there when it comes to defense, a deer in headlights if you will. You can't change that with a player, you can't teach reaction and perception. You just can't. David Lee will never improve as a defender. He couldn't defend you or I. That is how poor he is at the defensive end of the ball.

I think it is more about effort on the defensive end than anything else. For example, that last Orlando game, Lee displayed a willingness to body up Dwight and swat at shots that I haven't seen in his pro career. I just find it odd that he waits until the national televised game to display it.

just because a person played in the nba doesn't qualify them to coach anything. ewing and oak have no place on the bench.

^Don't you have girl problems to take care of?

There is a reason I say Ewing doesn't have a place on the bench. He's been in orlando how many years now, supposedly teaching D. Howard moves and stuff and look at how far Howard's game has progressed.

He wasn't considered for the Knicks job last year for a reason-- he's not coach material. And Oakley was just a bruiser as a player and hasn't been around the league in any capacity since he retired.

No, actually, I don't. Thanks anyway.

Howard's game has progressed a lot, especially on D. Not sure what you're talking about.

Oakley wasn't just a "bruiser". Clearly you never saw him play much. His defense was some of the best at his position. He doesn't have to be "around the league" to teach people how to play defense. Defense is defense. More importantly, basketball is basketball.

^You don't? That's weird...I recall an entire thread....but, anyway..

Howard's post game is non-existent after how many years of Ewing's tutelage?

Oakley WAS a bruiser, he played in the 'beat-em-up' era of the NBA where thugs like him and Lambier could get away with murder, all to the detriment of truly skilled basketball players. No thanks.

And how is a teenager going to tell me that I haven't watched Oakely play. lol.

can't hurt... this team needs some bad assness on the bench to teach these guys not to get punked every single game in the paint... if we draft a kid like Jordan Hill i would love to have Coach Oak teaching that kid how to play w/the nastiness & toughness that Oakman played with his entire career... i've been calling for Ewing to be brought on to teach Curry how to play like a true bigman & would love to have Oakley here to teach D Lee the same if he's here beyond next season.

^You call me a troll, and then say you've stopped dealing with trolls. But you're obviously still dealing with a troll. Go cry about a girl, GKFv2.

Just because someone doesn't jump on the emotional bandwagon of crying for former players to be coaches doesn't mean that person is a troll. The reasons for my opinion are stated. There are many more qualified coaches out there outside of Ewing and Oakley.

This is just like when everyone wanted to Pe Jr. on the Knicks, even though he is a scrub.

Thank God Donnie Walsh doesn't make emotional decisions otherwise this franchise would be screwed up more than it already is.

Just the fact that someone who values and knows the importance of defense is on the coaching staff is a step in the right direction. The fact that it is a guy with a great history with the franchise should be enough reason to give it a shot. I am still trying to figure out Herb's role on the staff.

^ yea, that's what i'm sayin'. we already have that emotional link to the past, and herb has been with us for a while. if you want someone that knows the value of defense, i don't know if a rookie "coach" like oakley is the way to go.

plus, this is all assuming that our coaching staff doesn't value defense-- i assure you, they do. we need to let this 'MDA doesn't like D' mentality go.
