what does starting over mean? they haven't been bad enough to get high picks. they have cap room - so what should they do? don't sign anyone this offseason and just draft players?
Start over, means start building a new core. Rebuilding does not mean draft picks. You have been posting with me long enough to know this is my review. Rebuilding means getting rid of the current core and finding new players to win with. Instead they are going to hang on to aging players and hope a free agent can put them over the top. It will make them competitive but I dont' see anyone that is going to put them in the class with the young guns coming up.
but signing ben gordon doesn't change that. they will probably trade rip, and let sheed + dice leave. they are building a new core.
Around the second tier..........Like we did.
but there's no other option outside of winning the lotto in a good year. alot of contenders are built b/c of pure luck.
No other option? That sounds like the NY defeatist attitude. There are plenty of options. The draft, free-agency and trade. Championships have been one with all three options. Your job is to put yourself in position to get a star. By paying 11 mill to a second tier player while the rest of your team is aging and the culture is falling apart, you aren't really putting yourself in a position to succeed. Being in position is how luck happens. Gordon is a good player, but what is the fit?
There is a miniscule chance Lebron or Wade comes here and makes us a contender. But by putting ourselves in position to make a play, we put ourselves in position to be lucky. By saying there is no chance to win so let's go get mid-teir players you aren't putting yourself in position. The Pistons have no star and no leader. Until then, they can make themselves good. They can compete. They can win 50 and get bounced by the Cavs, Celtics, Orlando and all the up and coming teams. It will be fun for the fans. They like us in 2000 can pretend we were competing for a title. But we weren't, and neither are they.
