(1) Explore all options to move up in the draft and if that goes nowhere, upgrade the point by drafting a talented lead guard for both now and for the future. Stephen Curry 1, Jeff Teague 1A. I like Curry just a little more right now but I'd be content with either guy moving forward.
(2) Consider S&T scenarios for both Lee & Nate. Look at every possibility and every proposal. I'd actually initiate some of the dialogue myself if I were Walsh - I'd love to flip Lee to whatever team drafts DeJuan Blair and bring back Blair and expiring filler. Then I'd look to deal Nate to a team that's willing to give us a 2010 1st rounder in return, somewhere in the 10-15 range, and expiring filler. Nate's a great little talent but he can be replaced more or less (see step 4). See, nothing crazy here - I'm not prepared to ask for the moon for either guy which would only waste everyone's time. You work out reasonable S&T scenarios for both guys - First, you get out from the big longterm money that you'd be adding which only handcuffs us in the long run (Lee and Nate are nice but re-uping both severly limits our future possibilities - they're gonna have to come up with a total in the neighborhood of $15 mil. a season for the next 5 yrs., maybe more, to realistically keep both) & you add a couple of assets/replacements for both players on the cheap - who knows, guys who may even turn out to be better. If Sacramento can deal Artest to Houston for Donte Greene then we can come up with something that works for us with our two guys. You don't let either walk away for nothing of course unless they sign some crazy offer sheet that just doesn't make any sense (sign them both first then work out something after or have something consummated beforehand ready to go when the time's right), but I just don't see how a rebuilding team like the Knicks, who have gone nowhere with both Lee & Nate the past few years despite their personal success, re-up these guys at big money with the intention of keeping and rebuilding with them as the foundation. That wouldn't be rebuilding, that's just staying stuck in the quicksand. It's the wrong move - both guys need to be moved to playoff teams where their play will actually have an impact. And we need salary-controlled assets and cap room.
(3) Come up with a later pick and get Taj Gibson.
(4) Sign Morris Almond to a reasonable contract, come up with a 2nd rounder and grab one of the shooters that will be there or at the very least be prepared to offer a talented shooting guard that may go undrafted a summer league contract with a legit possibility to make the club. Look hard at all of these alternatives and maybe even grab 2 guys. 2nd round to undrafted - if we grab the right off-guard prospect or two here we could really add some instant firepower on the cheap.
(5) Using a Nate trade to add a 2010 1st, think center in next year draft where there will be a few to choose from. Not sold on BJ Mullens at all - he's got size and athleticism but his basketball skills are extremely raw. Not ready to jump all over him, esp. with our 8th pick, just because we need size and he's the only center out there right now. Mullens to me is an enigma. A complete uncertainty. I see a guy who has some pluses but also a guy that needs time to develop properly and I tell you what, with a head coach that some feel doesn't appreciate the true big man & without a teacher of big men/post players even on the coaching staff -- a Pat Ewing or to a lesser degree even a Mark Aguirre -- I don't see how he would ever develop properly with us. Plus, we all know the developmental league is anything but - let's face it, the NBDL is basically a dumping ground for teams to temporarily exile players to, a place to stach guys until teams figure out what to do with them. In the ultra-watered down NBDL, guys run around compiling stats but they don't really develop as players for the most part (did Patrick O'Bryant develop as a prospect while in the dev. league??? Courtney Sims rips up the d-league then can't even get a cup of coffee in the NBA even with us). Mullens would never develop properly playing in Reno for us if you ask me... Grab the 2010 pick then closely monitor all the center prospects next year -- AJ Oglivy, Cole Aldrich, Jerome Jordan -- and see if any of them excel and might make some sense for us. This kid Oglivy from Vandy looks like he might be the most advanced of the lot - I'm really looking forward to watching him play next year. I do like the idea of trading for Kosta Koufos, he's a good player with a lot of good skills for a big guy. I agree totally that you definitely explore that idea...
