Rubio Will Use Leverage To Avoid Memphis, OKC?

May 21, 2009 11:10 AM EST

Ricky Rubio has some leverage in influencing which team selects him due to a necessary buyout from his team in Spain. His American agent Dan Fegan tried to shape where Yi Jianlian was selected in 2007, but was unsuccessful due to Milwaukee taking a hard line and no real alternative in his foreign contract.

“Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so," said a source that spoke to DraftExpress.com. "Fegan wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City.

“He’ll pull out if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing,” continued the source. “Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff—would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That’s one way to get him to fall to three.”

Sounds like good news for us...

Sounds like they want him on the west coast.

not sure that necessarily means he wants the west coast.

sacramento is just more of a b-ball city and is at least in california.

of course, he would like to be on the clippers since it's a much better market than memphis or hijack city, regardless of their history.

to me this is a potential situation that the knicks definitely have an advantage over other teams.

i had a feeling SAC-town would make the most sense... the Maloof Bros would love to bring in an international sensation to their franchise & i'm sure they could find "ways" around financing that buyout too... they've always seemed to embrace the international players over there... & Rubio could become the face of their franchise & make a dynamic backcourt tandem w/Martin... that team would be built to run up & down the court & take advantage of Rubio's skills in the transition game.

Rubio's issue is less about greed and more about the buyout situation with his team in Europe.

i think it's probably an equal share of both... who wants to go play in MEM? the city is ghetto as hell outside of a 1 block radius of the arena & there's nothing to do there other than get drunk at blues bars.

as my as we would all like to see it happen, I think the lottery balls have essentially spelled out that we are not going to get Rubio.

We need to come to terms with it and accept the fact that we'll likely be picking Curry.

HOWEVER, if Walsh can somehow pull the strings to obtain Rubio, I will worship him as my God and declare that day a high holy day.

Oklahoma can make a big push to swap picks with Clips as they can see a whole home town hero "lebron in cleveland" with Griff staying in OK city!

Clips might want Rubio, can trade Baron Davis back to Warriors and build on that.

What if Thunder traded Durant and its late no. 1 for Griffin straight up and still kept its pick? Durant is safer pick than Rubio and plays the wing. Clips can keep its big men and not trade Davis. Thunder get its man and league gets a solid franchise in both cities.
Grizz take Thabeet, I don't know where OK drafts at 3, Sac takes Rubio unless he plays hardball or we go up to get him.

Sac and Wiz got some trade possibilties. Chicago is ready to deal Hinrich and Ty Thomas which could set off a flurry of activity.

I heard all this talk about Rubio wanting to play for the Knicks. If what Pres said is true about the buyout why doesn't Donnie just contact Rubio's agent to say they are interested and Rubio just announce he will only use that buyout money from Nike for the Knicks. Really that simple. This is a allowed. Anything else then both sides should just move on.

Would definitely be the smart thing to do.

basically, yi didn't have a 6 million euro/$8 mil buyout like rubio does.

that makes the situations far different.

remember yao wanted to go to a big market team too because he had a big buyout ($7 mil). fortunately he landed with houston, and not only was he was also getting even more hype than rubio, but he just happened to be the most hyped player coming out of the most populated nation in the world whose gdp was growing at 10% and...who knows...may have helped pay off some of the buyout since their government wanted yao in the nba.

You're just making stuff up now.

"In the end Yao received approval from the Chinese sports federation only after the Rockets and the NBA promised that Yao would fulfill his commitments with the Chinese national team and pay the CBA five to eight percent of Yao's NBA salary for his entire career. The Shanghai Sharks were promised a buyout worth between $8 million and $15 million, depending on the length of his career."

making stuff up?

i wasn't really trying to, i was more speculating on how it might have played out regarding yao, if you re-read what i wrote.

a key point is that there was also a TREMENDOUS amount of pressure on yao to come into the nba. he was representing china, BIG TIME, where as rubio doesn't have such pressure. in other words, (especially given his being chinese, as i explain below) it would look awful for him (and yi actually) to be resistant to entering the nba over this. the chinese goverment was making money off of his coming into the nba. you think that's the case for rubio or any other american player who resists playing for a specific team over money?

but i sure wasn't making stuff up about his interest in playing for a big market team. that was being said constantly then...

wonder why?

because no way yao was going to like that idea if he doesn't think he's gonna get major $$$, so it made more sense to make him also happier by ensuring he played for a big market team.

here's another MAJOR difference between yao/yi and rubio...

CULTURE

in chinese culture it is expected you follow and do not question authority to the teeth. you also see things from more of a collective standpoint (confucianism) where as rubio is coming from western europe (spain) or other american players who have also held out for playing on a bigger team where individualism is far more normal.

You don't have to speculate about the past, it already happened and is documented.
