Be careful what you wish for.

LIttle Jimmy is letting other people run the show which is good. Little jimmy got lots of money.

New ownership group might not have money. Might have to pay back those big loans it took to buy MSG.

"Spun off" can mean it remains a public entity unto it's self.

As I understand it, a spin-off doesn't necessarily mean the Dolan's will not own MSG... but, I imagine having the separate corporate structure in place would make it easier to make the sale once we sign Lebron and Wade (and the value of the franchise goes through the roof).

A spinoff wouldn't mean a sale in the traditional sense, but it would mean that MSG would operate as a separate legal corporation and shares in the new corporation would go public. Dolan would not have any power in terms of day to day operations on the company, though he could be a large shareholder.

If Cablevision planning to put MSG/Knicks/Rangers on sale they will spend NO money on this for a year or so.
This brings back the following:
1. Why to pay-off Eddy? - New owner will pay in 2010-11.
2. No need to sign Lee/Nate - let them go.
3. No need to spend on MLE, etc. why bother?
4. No cash for future picks, signings, etc.

So be prepared for slooooooooooowwwwwwwwww year.

I just disagree. Without wondering whether they are really looking to sell, if there was an intent to sell the Knicks, its at that time when you want the business to look its best. For example, if you are selling your home, put a fresh coat of paint on it and sweep the floors. If you are about to sell your car, you don't drive it into a tree because you don't care...

What I did before selling my house is hired some contractor with bunch of Mexicans to fresh-paint some scratches on my walls and cover the rust on my water heater.
No one in clear mind will invest in something he wants to sell.
He will cut the cost to make it look more profitable and to make new owner think he can start from clean.

That's business 101. Forget 2010, cut cost, max out with the assets you have and turn a quick profit. New owners will not have the resources that a Cablevision have even if it is a spinoff. No one is going to pay a price tage of $3 billion and then come in and add $200 million on top of it. This was already done with the Knicks during the late 80s and early 90s from ITS, Paramount, CBS and Viacom. Still recall Checketts being unable to add salary because of these restrictions and having a new boss every few months. Ownership was unstable (one of Riley's biggest complaints) and didn't truly turn and profit and look to add resources until Cablevision brought it from Paramount. Hate Dolan but he spent the money. This news won't sit to well with Stern at all. The Knicks will under the cap but will stay far under the cap for awhile. Adios D'Antoni, Miami is on line 3 waiting for a response. You can just fax over your response to the Knicks.

NY Times article today seems to suggest it might be more about possibly selling the cable company, with the increased competition they are getting from verizon, and the dolan's running MSG instead.

in other words, they probably ain't selling the team.

Industry analysts have speculated for some time that Cablevision would sell itself to Time Warner Cable and Comcast, the country’s two largest cable companies. They say that the cable division, which represents nearly 70 percent of Cablevision’s revenue, would be easier to sell if M.S.G. and Rainbow, which runs three cable television networks, were peeled off.

Some analysts suspect that the Dolan family, which controls 70 percent of Cablevision’s voting rights, could spin off M.S.G., selling the cable business and focusing on the sports and entertainment business.
