Crime in the United States has fluctuated considerably over the course of the last half-century, rising significantly in the late 1960s and 1970s, peaking in the 1980s and then decreasing considerably in the 1990s. Over the past thirty years, the crime rate rose throughout the 1980s, reached its peak in 1991 and then began to decrease throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The year 2005 was overall the safest year in the past thirty years. The recent overall decrease has reflected upon all significant types of crime, with all violent and property crimes having decreased and reached an all-time low. The homicide rate in particular has decreased over 42% between its record high point in 1991 and 2005.

The bolded is obviously a symptom of rap music.

Crime is over-exaggerated in this country due to a sensationalistic media and fear-mongering politicians. Our prisons continue to swell in accordance to our prison industrial complex locking people up over draconian, non-violent drug laws.

i love how, outside of allanfan, no one even attempted to address the NUMBERS the government has placed in your laps. and allanfan i don't think your argument is very good at all.

however, i will say this-- my condemnation of video games, rap music, and illicit substance was not thought out enough. for this, i admit to a mistake.

that said...how one can argue that crime hasn't increased, that we don't live in a crime-ridden society, is BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION. the number of violent crimes has SKYROCKETED, not merely nudged upwards.

blame it on what you want; and im sure the answer is not very cut and dry. but the FACT is that crime, violent crime, has risen in the last 40 years, and it has risen by a very serious, substantial amount. who can argue this? i am not offering an answer as to why nor am i offering an aanswer as to what can be done, but common, what the heck?

sebstar, i read the paragraph. and it is perfectly IN-LINE with what I have been presenting all along. 2005 - 30 = 1975. even according to my original graph, one can see that crime HAS indeed been the lowest in 30 years. since 1975. but what even the 1975 level is MORE THAN DOUBLE that of the beginning of the graph (1960).

also, in the same paragraph, i would like to point out that:
Over the past thirty years, the crime rate rose throughout the 1980s, reached its peak in 1991 and then began to decrease throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Recent statistics indicate that crime could again be increasing. The year 2005 was overall the safest year in the past thirty years.

so really, thanks for backing up exactly what i have been saying since the first post with that graph. here is the graph again:


we might not agree on a lot, but i don't understand what it is about this that we can't agree on? crime-ridden society, indeed.

it also seems that you've conveniently left out the sentence that i've bolded in this post. why did you do that?
