At least a first round pick is very vague. Where in the first round? He's worth several late picks but not worth one very high lottery pick. If you want to pinpoint precisely what he's worth, you need more info. than you'd get just from catching some games on TV.

dude, the point is u don't let him walk for nothing in return... whether u get back 1 pick or multiple picks, getting nothing back is the ultimate moronic move to make.

it's tough to trade lee next year (if you match the contract) b/c of BYC issues. he won't be eligible to be traded until well into the 10/11 season.

if that's the case then Walsh pretty much already fugged up bigtime unless he can sign D Lee to a well below market value deal.

naw, he can also move him in a sign-and-trade.

that's the most likely way lee is going to get traded at this point.

Oh yeah. Suppose Portland signs him to $10 million. Donnie says wait let's sign and trade. Pritchard says naw. If you want him then match it. Really that simple. All the Knicks have right now is the right to match any salary. They don't have any other rights beyond that. This isn't Joe Johnson where you can live with his max contract. This is organization where every other gm knows what Donnie is trying to do in 2010.

I don't know why people are so eager to trash a guy for moves (signings, trades, etc.) we don't know he will or will not make, or for moves we don't know were or were not possible. I mean, feel free to hypothesize but this ain't video games, there's more to deals than working within the cap. There are people involved, jobs at stake, agents, players, etc. That's not to say I won't speculate on what I would do. I'm just not going to pretend that I know exactly how everything worked out behind the scenes. It takes more than just one person to make a deal.

It will be Walsh's third big mistake since being hired with the Knicks. The first was drafting Gallo. If Gallo ever returns and is able to play I don't think he will ever come near the success his lottery peers have and he probably will not approach the success of most of the players taken in the first round. The fact that teams may have known about Gallo's back prior to the draft just makes it worse. The second huge mistake was hiring D'Antoni.

wrong and wrongggggggg...no mistakes so far. don walsh is batting 1.000, d'antoni is exactly the type of coach we needed to breathe life into this arena and gallo, even if he doesn't turn out to be an all-star (which i doubt), is still a great pick. it's a gamble that you had to take. best case you have a super-dirk, worst case you have a mini-bargnani.

WE AIN'T NOWHERE WITH THIS BUM CHOKER IN CARMELO. GIVE ME STARKS'S 2-21 ANY DAY OVER THIS LACKLUSTER CLUSTEREFF.

I don't think Walsh made any big mistake yet. A few questionable moves. Balkman. Roberson. Yet other than that it's been fine. Hughes isn't good but he's 2010 anyway and we made roster space by doing that move.

As to Lee and even Nate I doubt we lose either for nothing unless some team is foolish enough to give them HUGE paydays (Lee 14M, Nate 9M - something ridiculous like that).

If it does happen then yes Walsh should have pulled the trigger on a Jeffries+Nate(or Lee) for more relief and maybe a pick if possible. The Kenny Thomas deal was there. He declined. I know he told teams if they want Lee then they want Curry and he was not successful in that bid.

So he tried, with both players, but now thanks to the STUPID CBA we, like many teams, are painted into the QO corner which could have you losing the player outright for nothing in return. If it happens then yes it's a failure in terms of hindsight.

So far though Donnie has done just what he said he would. He'd remove the malcontents. He'd give us financial flexibility.

Flexibility of which would not be used until the summer of 2010 for those who still seem to not quite understand the idea here.
